I have this same problem on mine sometimes. I did not replace anything. There is a manual fix. I pull outwards on the lock attachment (on the trunk itself) to line it up correctly. Then it shuts with no problems. It's an alignment problem. A cheap fix is patience and to adjust locking mechanism by giving it a little pull.

The manual pull up alignment works, the replacing the latch works but...... eventually you'll need repair on the lid. After two latches and two trips to the delaer over the years, it would not close. Upon inspection the plate holding the latch on the trunk had split and pulled loose. I had to have it welded back in place by a body shop.

I have a 2004 chevy cavalier and the trunk latch won't click into place and close fully, therefore the trunk won't close fully.

yes that could be the problem. try this putt your key in to the lock and turn it to unlock it , check to see if latch is open ,while still holding the key in the unlock position close the trunk and relock it with the key while pushing down on the hood at the same time. replace the lock when you can .there is no quick fix for this unless u use a bungee cord for it .

This morning I opened my trunk to my 2055 Pontiac Sunfire and when I went to close it the black casing around the latch on the frame of the car came off so I put it back on and when I went to close the...

You may have inadvertently locked the latch when putting the plastic piece back on look at the latch mechanism and where the latch locks on the bar put a screw driver in the latch mechanism and then operate the lat to open it should open up then try shutting the trunk lid do it with the plastic piece off first to be sure thats the problem because if you have the plastic piece on you may make it nearly impossible to open it up. Then if it works put the plastic piece back on then make sure the latch is open and then close it does it work? if yes you did it if not write back to me for more help. Thanks for using fix-ya.

My trunk won't close.

Is the trunk latch in the "locked" position?

Lift the trunk lid and look where the latch is, right in the center. The lower part (on the car) is a square metal loop, and the latch part (on the lid) has a slot that fits over that loop with an inner part to grab on to the loop.

If the latch is blocking the slot, then it won't close. The solution in this case is to take your keys and turn them as though you were opening the trunk. This should release the latch so the slot is clear.

Good luck!

2005 sunfire trunk won't close and latch

this happened all the time on my 03, take two plyers, one in each hand and put them both onto the u-bolt (the part that the latch latches to) and pull up then try and close the trunk, sometimes the latch pushes that ubolt platform down so it cant grab

Trunk latch wont hold shut on my 02 cavalier

Make sure it is not binding/sticking where you pull the release cable.

Drench the entire works in WD-40. Push it back and forth until it moves with no resistance.

Make sure the part that hooks onto the latch hasn't come loose enough to not slide over when it makes contact.

If that doesn't work, take the whole thing off. You'll have to anyway to replace it. Chances are with it disassembled you'll see what's wrong.

Trunk wont open where is emergency switch inside trunk

I had the same problem as you. Take out the back seat and there is a large access hole to the interior. There are two bolts that are fairly easy to get to. Remove them and the truck latch is removed from the lid and trunk will open.
