Replacing third brake light on 97 Ford Explorer

I'm trying to replace the third brake light on a 97 ford explorerThe only way I see to r&r it is to remove the whole black plastic like wrap on outside of vehicle which also contains the spray outlit for the rear washer. That involves removing the rivots then replacing them. also I'll need to remove the screws from inside the cab and take out the ballast and such. Correct? I'm just afraid of screwing up that balck plastic like wrap when I go to reinstall it.

Yea what bad ford has done in making the replacement of the third brakelight high mount. Its not as simple as just taking out two screws. An ididiot desighned this obvioulsly, probably someone who got a job for the company because they knew someone and knew nothing about working on a vehicle. Just the same for a 99 explorer you have to remove the outer casing around the lens cover. Then open the hatch and remove the top 4 or five plastic rivots from the plastic shell around the inside of the door. Next remove the two screws in the ballast, their is a stud with a nut under the ballast. You will see this after you remove the ballast. take that nut off. To the right and left of the ballast are two access holes with two rubber boots in them. you will need to remove them next. Then you will see the remaining two studs and nutts that need to be removed. Like i said before an idiot desighned this.

2001 ford sports trac brake lights not working ,

This may be a simple fix, where the wheel jack or washer bottle is located in the back behind the panel, there should be connectors for the rear lights, it is possible that the plug has been dislodged, remove the panels and check the plug connections. Good luck.

Which Fuse controls the light of my 97 Ford Explorer?

you can look on google to try and find a fuse diagram or start pulling fuses one by one until the light goes out...you're not going to hurt anything by doing that.

Cant find the fuse for my brake lights on my 2002 ford explorer

if the third brake light works you will probably need a brake on off switch. the fuse panels on that truck are under the dash near the steering column and under the hood in the power distribution box. both of these panels are identified in the owners manuel.

Third brake light flashing when engine is off, no main brake lights

this does not sound like a fuse problem. seems like a wiring issue. You probably have wires shorted together, and/or shorts to ground somewhere.

Brake switch is a good place to start, make sure it's working fine. To find the wiring issue you will need electrical diagrams, so get yourself a repair manual for a 1998 Explorer.

Look at connectors, see if you can find components or connections where all the brake light and tail lights connect to together. Using a multi meter you should be able to pin point the issue if u follow the wiring from the battery to the lights using the diagrams and checking connectors.
