2002 Toyota Corolla S. Replaced battery this morning, drove car 6 miles. Engine tachometer jumped twice while driving, them engine stalled. Tried starting car, engine tries to turn over but will not. Hooked up jumper cables and tried jump starting. This didn't work. Car battery not the problem. Did not smell any gas fumes while trying to start car, did not hear fuel pump trying to prime. Any suggestions?

Greg, I read your complete message, but nowhere did I see that you replaced the Cam Sensor. The EGR will cause it to stall at stops but usually will not prevent it from restarting. If changing the battery does not solve problem, or only solves it until the battery dies then have the alternator tested. I have noticed on several occasions with a couple of my vehicles that at times of very high moisture in the air they do not stay running, once the humidity goes down they are fine.
If I understand you correctly, you have a bad TPS (throttle position sensor). nothing more. Replace the TPS... the oil cap has nothing in common with the TPS... that's a fact!
you say your furl mileage is good,so I'm thinking your engine is tuned,and you say you engine temp is good.How many miles do you have on your engine?from what your saying it sound like your timing belt could be going bad,the teeth on the rubber belt could begning to wear and cause the belt to slip out of time just enough to cause your problem.
It might leave you stranded. Because without the alternator. which I think is your problem your battery will run down in a very short time. Even if you had a new battery.Check the belt first as Toyota Ed suggested. If it's good, and not broken. Replace the alternator and if you have to, the battery also. One could affect the other.
Remove the starter & inspect the contacts inside the starter solenoid housing. If they are burnt and/or worn, you will get this condition. Replace the contacts and the plunger, or replace the starter. I change contacts in my shop 3-4 times a week. Quite a common failure. The clicking noise is the plunger hitting one contact, but not the other, due to wear.
I worked at an all Honda Indy shop in Santa Fe, NM and saw this problem at least twice!
As I remember, the battery sits back against the firewall on an elevated tray passenger side.
First: Remove battery from car.
Second: Remove battery tray if possible.
Third: Locate empty space under battery tray. This is usually full of some organic matter like leaves, tree bits, you name it. It's just an accidental trap for junk.
Fourth: CLean out all foreign matter and locate the ground cable that is bolted to the body in the bottom of this space.
Fifth: Detach this ground cable, cleaning it and the attachment point. This was the bad ground connection that caused my customers' CRVs to stall at the oddest times. Cleaning out this space, and remaking a good ground connection there, depending on how corroded it is, cured this strange stalling symptom. Hope that's your deal! TaterTodd
