I have a 2000 alero it was jerking like it had a bad transmission so i changed the plugs and plug wired now it has a really rough idle and smells like old gas and wen you take off in either forward or reverse it studders but once you get it goin up to speed it runs great what is the problem
Greetings huster69aa:
I would look at a couple of things, first change your fuel filter because it may be clogged. Also add fuel injector cleaner to your next gas fill up. Please check your oil level on your oil stick and make sure it is on or near the full line. Also make sure you had put your spark plug wires back in the car in the correct firing order. Make sure your spark plugs are not fouled. Also check for vacuum leaks at the fuel injectors or carburator. Check your vacuum hoses for leaks. When you changed your spark plugs did you change your distributor cap? Good Luck
.A}.could be the fuel filter ..B}.converter is plugging up .C} a vacuum line has come dry-rotted and or is come unattached and is sucking air .D} .idle speed is too low ..E}.The firing order is incorrect ! ....F}.clogged air cleaner ? ...G} check all fluid levels for proper fill levels . or it could be the choke sensor ids sticking or faulty ....have you tried running any fuel injection cleaner and a good grade gas this is just a minor list of points to start with after all we all get bad gas sometimes .
I, too, have a 2000 Alero 2.4L and am having the same problem, but worse. Whenever I brake to a stop while in Drive, the engine stalls sometimes. I thought it was the torque converter going bad. I tried the cheap fixes first when fuel system cleaner and air filter. I took it to a parts store and they pulled the code. "Service Engine Soon" light came on. "Too Rich Bank 1" was on the screen of their code machine. I was thinking fuel filter on my way to the parts store, but wouldn't a clogged fuel filter make it too lean? I have cleaned my air filter and have ran two tank fulls with "Sea Foam" additive. I have had some better low-idle performance, but it hasn't cured the problem. Today I held the throttle down at 1,500 RPM in Park to see if it was running steady, and the engine began to stall! I had to let off the throttle so that it wouldn't stall. That's when the "Service Engine Soon" light came on. About a year ago, I had the fuel injectors professionally cleaned at a shop. Is the throttle actually electro-mechanical? Is there a throttle relay or servo that's going bad?

My car was doing the same thing...The Ignition/Distributor Cover is plastic and cracks easily, causing an arch of the spark through the crack. I just paid $400 to have the Ignition Coils replaced and the Ignition Cap replaced.
