Not the igniton switch, its the ingition cylinder and or the housing. The switch is not part of what you are really turning. It's connected to it via gears. The common problem is the key gets worn out and the tumblers wear also. Eventualy they do not line up right and will not make the "bar" drop in the cylinder to allow it to turn from the off positon. If you have the title in your name and the key has never been rekeyed or the code has been changed you can go down to a dealership with all of the info for the truck and they can cut you a key from the vin number. You can try that first before you put a cylinder and housing in it.

Testimonial: "I really appreciate this info it makes sense and hopefully this solves the problem. it gets really annoying not being able to start the truci"

Does a replacement key /ignition lock cylinder have to be programmed?

Yes, it is much easier to order a replacement key from the dealership than it is to replace the lock cylinder.

I have had trouble starting my Chevy blazer 2001, before it would feel like the ignition would get stuck, now the key won't turn either way and the steering wheel is locked and I can't turn it on

Try turning the steering wheel hard in each direction while trying to turn key. Wheel lock may be holding key. If not, sounds like you need to replace ignition lock cylinder or the ignition switch. Good luck, DW

Replace ignition cylinder

The key has to be in the switch, battery unhooked, turn key to start position, insert probe into small hole above cylinder to trip the wedge, and pull out.

2001 chevy 2500 ignition key takes some time getting to turn in the ignition. The key seems to be very warn from years of use how hard is it to replace the ignition and keys.

go to the dealer have them cut new keys to Vin they will work like new, the new lock cylinder comes out fairly easy once the cover is completely removed but that also has to be set by a dealer.

2001 chevy impala security light keeps coming on

This is a problem with chevy vehicles that have the system theft light. after a couple of years of using the key, the lock tumblers inside the ignition switch tend to wear out and so causing the system to think it's being stolen. Now you have to put the key in and turn the ignition to the on position, without cranking the car and leave it for 10 minutes until the theft light goes out. Very annoying especially if you're in a hurry. The dealer cost to repair the ignition switch goes for about $600-$800. that includes re-teaching the key.

I believe that the vehicle antitheft is tied into the drivers door lock. Maybe try disconnecting the battery for 2 minutes.

Ignition tumbler locked up. Key still works well in doors. Steering wheel is not locking, but key wont turn

try a spare key, or push key into lock while turning
it is the tip [pointy end] of the key that releases the switch tumbler lock allowing it to turn. keys & switches wear out, a 'heavy' key ring especially wears the switch.
