Check ALL the grounds to the PCM. The main ones are at the starter and the fuse box for the battery... there are others. If this isn't you issue then get a rebuilt PCM for $200 with exchange The rebuilders need the VIN and odometer reading to make it happen for you. (Dealer is a rip-off.)

SOURCE: crankshaft position sensor

1.Prepare yourself for a job that is to say the least "not fun".
2.In addition to your normal set of tools, you will need a tiny (mechanic's style ignition set) 5 mm wrench. A socket will not fit!
3.Once you've got a lot of stuff out of your and before you're-assemble everything, take a serious look at replacing the following: 2 rad hoses, 1 thermostat bypass hose, 1 thermostat, 3 belts, camshaft sensor, oil filter (as it is in the way & must be removed)
4.90% of this job will be done from the bottom, so put the front end up on axle stands or ramps (preferred as axle stands can get in the way for this job).
5.Disconnect negative battery terminal.
6.Remove upper rad hose.
7.Loosen the four 13 mm crank pulley bolts.
8.Remove all three belts.
9.Remove oil filter and you might as well drain the oil too.
10.Remove crank pulley.
11.Remove upper (1 center nut) and lower (2 side bolts) harmonic balancer shroud.
12.There should be no need to remove the harmonic balancer or crank bolt.
13.The sensor is located behind the harmonic balancer towards the bottom. Observe how the sensor is installed. It is possible to put it in backwards (don't ask). Remove the two 5mm bolts securing the sensor. You may have to put a socket on the crank bolt and turn it clockwise to allow the sensor to clear the vanes that the sensor cradles. Disconnect the two connectors up top. Be careful as old plastic = brittle plastic.
14.Spray some WD40 or equivalent on the electrical connectors for good measure.
15.Snake the sensor and wiring harness into place.
16.Loosely tighten the two 5mm bolts. Have a buddy slowly turn the crank bolt again to ensure the sensor clears the vanes. Think of how a caliper clears a rotor and must sit squarely upon it (thanks Wayne). OR, If you are made of money, in which case you would never be doing this job in the first place, buy Ford's feeler gauge designed specifically for this purpose. I would still double-check the clearances anyway!
17.Final tighten the two 5 mm bolts and check the sensor's clearance on last time.
18.Re-connect the two connectors up top.
19.Re-attach crank pulley. Rotate the pulley until all four holes line up. It is possible to force the pulley on wrong!
20.Put on three belts.
21.Tighten crank pulley bolts.
22.Attach upper rad hose.
23.Replace oil filter and add oil.
24.Attach negative batter terminal.
25.Start 'er up. The ECM will have to re-learn idle!

In the kit there are two sensor that look identical. The one for the crankshaft has a white paint mark on it near the bolt hole. Make sure that it is in the right location.

Engine light on with code P0725

P0725 JEEP Description The Engine Control Module (ECM) monitors the engine speed through the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor with the engine running, and send signal to the Transmission Control Module (TCM).
The code is set when the TCM does not get an engine speed signal from the ECM.
Could be a problem with either computer, the link between the two, or the crank sensor.

1994 Grand Cherokee, 5.2 V8 shuts off when hot. Cool for an hour or 2, starts up after a half hour or so, then dies again. No trouble codes except 12 and 55; I pulled fuses to check them, hence the code...

NOTE: With the jeep cherokees. the Check Engine light if continuously driven with it on for more than 25 minutes whilst still traveling will engage the "PCM self protect" usually around the 27minute mark, and shut down the vehicle, and yes it takes 90 minutes to reset,

you might find that you will arrive ok, at your destination with this issue... pull up, and then it wont start again a few minutes later, this is the PCM Shutdown protection.....when the check engine light is on means the PCM is reset, found the error and why you can only run the car with the check engine light for about half an hour.

"You can however drive and turn the car off and coast in neutral and turn on the vehicle again to buy yourself more time with the "Check Engine time limit shutoff"

happened to me in mine, the error codes never showed up for the crankshaft position sensor
either...

i replaced the crankshaft position sensor under the transmission case, and it got rid of the issue this crank sensor is a common cause of the cherokees , it could no longer read the speed of the crankteeth. and can't get a reading the car is still running hence the shutdown, also you will find it also controls the PCM to engage your second fan on the radiator because it cant tell the vehicle is still running, and causes the PCM to get confused and wont let the rest of the engine function properly ie: coolant sensors, and Thermostat sensors, and you will find it overheats and needs to cool some times...which is why the PCM shutsdown the car.....try the crankshaft position sensor replacement under the transmission it's usually the cause of this on all cherokees "makes no difference if its a V8 or not by the way, same thing happens on 4.0 straight six engines also" .
