CarGurusApr 6, 2014 - Your cars computer gathers info on speed in order to shift gears properly.... then you won't have a speedo and the ECM will not tell the TCM to shift gears in the trans. .... Car: 2003 Dodge Neon SXT, automatic transmission.
Maybe the speedometer connection at the transmission might be interfering with the shift lever at the transmission. Not sure if this would apply to the 2002 Neon but on some older model cars I believe it could happen. Just a thought.
I would start with checking the fluid level in the transmission.
With the vehicle on a level surface start it and let it run in park. Pull the transmission dipstick wipe it clean, reinsert and pull it out. If the fluid is not in the cross hatch area add 1/2 quart of ATF+4 and recheck the fluid level (it will take a couple of minutes for the fluid to settle out of the dipstick tube). Continue adding 1/2 quart at a time until the level is in the cross hatch area.
With your foot on the brake run the transmission through all the gears. place the transmission in park and recheck the level, adding as necessary.
Ck your fluid level in the trans and shift through all the gears manually. You may want to replace the trans vacuum. modulator. It's inexpensive and easy to replace. Good Luck.
