I have an 89 cherokee. it kept popping out of four wheel drive, we came to the conclusion that the t case was going out. it is a model 242 j. i bought another t case, used, same model and same gear ratio. i got it all swapped out and now i cant get the jeep to go into a gear. i put it in reverse and nothing, as soon as i move it back to park, something grinds to a stop (sounds similar to trying to shift too fast, you know where the gears grind a bit). i tried putting the tranny into drive and then moving the t case throughout its range and nothing happens. is this t case no good or was it something i did on the install? everything mated up very nice so i think the install should b ok! by the way, the used t case came out of a 93 grand cherokee

First check plug on actuator on front differential and be sure that plug is securely fastened to sensor and that plug has no rusted or corroded pins. Then test actuator and be sure it is operating properly. More than likely your four wheel drive actuator is malfunctioning.
Four low is almost never used. I use it on very steep rocky or muddy trails in the woods or to pull someone out of mud or a ditch. Though some will shift standing still it is best do do this while rolling. Four high can be shifted at low speeds of 2 to about 35mph (higher also but not really good idea) Low can only be shifted between 2 to 10mph. If you find yourself stuck and unable to shift because you aren't rolling you can also turn the engine off, engage the transfer case and re-start. That avoids having the gears clashing together. Best rule is if it begins to grind, don't force it.
If you engage the 4WD with a switch instead of manually, there is a motor in or on the transfer case. Because of the location, these can go bad.u need to check all your switches and actuators there are actuators under vehicle that clog up with dirt.also try putting vehicle in neutral before engaging 4x4.
This will help. Thanks please keep updated.please do rate the solution positively .thank you for using fixya.
Just pull up on the 4 wheel drive lever .. You can shift on the fly to part time and full time but you gotta stop and in park or neutral you can shift into 4 wheel lo .. I have one myself .. love those jeeps .. you "understand"
I do not have a vacuum diagram for the 89 Cherokee, but my 89 had the same issue several times and all it was is that the block of vacuum lines that go into the front axle on the rear of the axle on the passenger side of the vehicle. I ended up having to put a zip tie around the axle and hose block to hold it on. Have not had the issue again since doing this. Hope that helps.
