I am considering buying an inexpensive Isuzu Trooper 2.8 TDI 1988 that has run 380 000 km, with little corrosion. But the owner says there is a clicking sound in of the rear wheels, but he does not know what is wrong. I know it is not a good investment for the future buying a car like this, but it would be nice as a fun winter/leasure car for a year or two. Still I am a a bit afraid of ending up with a costly repair at the very beginning. Any comments? Experiences? Recommodations? Thanks in advance.
See if you can isolate where the clicking sound is coming from. If its coming from the axle that could be very expensive. If its coming from the drum brakes that would probably be not as expensive.
How are the tires on the vehicle? If you want it as a winter or leisure car you will want good tires with good tread depth left on them.
Take a look online at other isuzu troopers that are about the same age and compare the kms/miles on them and see how them compare so you can estimate about how much life is left in it.
I would spend $50 and get a thorough inspection done on it so you know exactlly what needs to be done on it. Ask the mechanic their opinion and make sure they know you want to keep it for just a couple years. (By the way, they may find some things on it that you probably should fix since they affect the safety of the vehicle and subsequently the occupants.) Hope this helps.
