1999 saab convertible. The top goes up and 90% of the way down.. The motors run well, they stop at the last step, the back end of the roof is at a 90 degree angle to the body . Is there a relay or fuse for this last segment?

I had the same problem last summer. I fixed it by replacing the microswitches (kind of tricky to get to). BUT NOW I have this problem (I am going to copy/paste from another saab site I posted on) :

"Last summer, I had to replace one of the microswitches for the top & it finally worked fine.

Just a few weeks later, I replaced the car battery. MINUTES after I replaced battery, the top went back to doing what it was doing before I replaced the microswitch (when putting top back up, the cycle would stop when the back windshield was supposed to go down & lock down - it stays stuck up inthe air. Also, when top is down after several minutes it beeps 'check soft top' - The top was actually being put DOWN when the battery/car died. Then I went got a battery (in my 2nd car), replaced it, went to put top back UP & here I am...)

So I checked both the microswitches again & replaced the one I hadn't before - but it still won't work.

A friend who has a '05 convertibel said she thought the electrical system had to be 're-calibrated' or re-set when battery is changed.

Motor fuid is full. Propellar is new.

Car has been parked in my garage since NOV w/top down. Any advice? "

I posted that on saabsite.com - haven't heard back except for someone else having other electrical problems.

Did you find the solution to your? PLEASE let me know what you found out.

THANK YOU!! SK 9 FEB 10

I never followed up with this ... it was the most simple fix!!! I bought two used switches off of a wrecked SAAB 9-6. All I had to do was VERY GENTLY bend the long silver switch tab UP at the end - so they would make a full connection. And voila - the top worked perfectly .... and then I sold the car. No ore SAABs for this girl. >>>> SK

No but also make sure theres nothing inside jamming it,or ther may be another motor that pulls it all the down, i would make sure its not hitting something in the trunk first.

99 SAAB convertible, top takes a long time to open and close now.

The most common reason for this is low hydraulic fluid. The noise is probably the pump running while empty. When fluid id present it dampens that noise. Behind the rear seat is the combination motor/pump/reservoir. With the top in the DOWN position, fill the reservoir with ATF and cycle the system a few times as far as it will go. Repeat until the reservoir will take no more fluid. If that works, it is only a patch fix. You must now inspect the lines, motor and cylinders for leaks. The fluid does not evaporate. If it is low, you have a leak. Karl at topgunwon.com

Looking at buying a 1999 Saab 9-5 convertible but the top wont go down on it. If I need to replace the motor is this difficult to replace?

It is not an inexpensive problem to repair. Its probably low on fluid wich means it has a leak in one of the top rams or it could also be the drive gear in the pump motor which can be repaired if one is crafty. look in trunk, forward rail 2 holes one for light 1 for fluid level. Con you hear motor running?

93 convertible top wont go down

This happenrd to me the first few times after filling the tank. When the roof stops push the switch to up then back until movement stops then go back to down, eventually it will get rid of all the air in the system and the roof should start to work.

Saab convertible hood keeps jamming when taking down and putting

Could be 2 things...
THe nipple on the hood can be adjusted higher and lower to make a looser or tighter fit...
or the release cable can be tighted but a small clamp on the radiator core support check those 2 things first...

1997 Saab Convertible top is broken, and the rain is coming in!

the rear of the top under the back window is drawn down into place and latched by its own motor that simply pulls or pushes two rods. If the motor stopped moving for whatever reason, simply fold down the back seat, reach your arm through the little access at the top of the boot on the drivers side and pop the rods out of place and latch/unlatch manually. this takes a flashlight and some inspection time to do at first if you dont know what your feeling for.

i have the same problem with my 98 900s

1989 saab convertable top motor

the convertible top motor is underneath the upholstery in the rear trunk compartment underneath the package shelf.undo the upolstery clips and lower the cloth in the trunk exposing the motor and reservoir. make shure after motor replacement you refill the reservoir completely and cycle the top up and down a few times to purge the lines of air. otherwise you will have erratic top operation.

1999 Saab 9-3 convertible. Motor to top is dead. $1600.00 to replace. I know I can make the top come down manuelly but how?

There is a manual release behind the rear seat on the passenger side. Pulling it releases the tonneau motor plate away from the gears, allowing top to be raised and lowered manually.Once this release is used, the back bottom edge of the top will never seat against the tonneau again until the top is repaired.

Saab roof starts to open but the lid dose not fully open to let the roof fold down

The 94-98 Saab 900 cars have numerous top issues that are known. The primary issue is the design of the convertible top Tonneau motor that is located in the right rear quarter panel behind the light. The problem with the original motors was that there was not enough strength in the housing that held the motor to support the top movement because the teeth on the gear drive would get chewed up when the motor moved out of position. The failure of the Tonneau motor causes the top to chatter about half way up or down because the teeth of the motor gears would get chipped off. Replacement of the gears or replacement of the motor is the only repair and the convertible top Control module must be programmed after the repair by someone with a Saab Tech 2 computer tool which is used to program the top potentiometer settings. If you catch this problem early enough it can be repaired by using the bracket reinforcement kit.
Check latches is also a common failure which displays on the Saab Information Display (SID) Generally, this failure is due to problems with the micro-switch located in the latches that secure the convertible top when up.
Another issue with the convertible tops has been the control module that controls the top electronically. The major problem with this is device is that it looses the ability to communicate with the Saab tech 2 tools. This problem appears to have been solved in the newest versions of the ECM.
This TSB covers the known issues with NG 900 vert tops. There are numerous others for the 9-3 tops.
