My 1967 mustang power steering control valve and ram were leaking I bought a rebuild kit for both of them when i reinstalled them and turned the motor over the steering wheel rotates violently hard to the right at idle i shut it down thinking the lines might be crossed but when i switched the only 2 interchangeable lines (off the ram) and started it went hard to the left. I got another control valve to see if that was the problem and installed it and turned the car over again and it is still going hard over to the right at idle. what is making it do that?

The control valve is normally in Neutral. When you turn the steering wheel, it moves the gearbox, which is connected to the pitman arm, which is connected to the control valve. The control valve then sends pressure to the ram to either extend or retract it. I highly recommend that you disconnect the control valve from the pitman arm, center the valve, then center the wheels. Reconnect the pitman arm to the valve and restart the car. If it does it still, the problem is in the control valve ... replace it or rebuild it again.

'65' mustang p/s control valve

i would advise against any attempt to take it apart. the best way is to replace it as one piece with the draglink attatched to the new part. there are a couple of companies on the web that sell the control valves. they usually require the old part back because they are rare to find.

Try tightening your spool bolt. Take off the spring cap, tighten the adjusting nut till it is snug, then back it off no more than a 1/4 turn. Hopefully this will help. If you need a diagram, let me know. I have a shop manual that shows all..
