The four wheel drive quit working while driving in 4 wheel high on a back road. The truck is a 1991 Chevy Silverado CK 2500. The front axle drive light on the floor shifter does not light up when shifting into 4 high or low now.

No, the four wheel drive quit working. There were no unusual noises. I had backed up to turn around and when I tried to go forward the rear wheels spun out on the icy road. That's when I noticed the light was out, but the shifter was still in the 4 high position. I put it in 4 low and it went into the lower gear range, but still no front axle drive.

Your truck should have a solenoid attached to the front axel (more so to the right side). Unplug the solenoid and probe the harness. It should be two wires if not tell me. But it should have twelve volts on one and ground on the other (with the 4wd in-gauged) If that is fine remove the solenoid and see if it actuates when put it into 2wd and 4wd. If that checks out then the problem is either somewhere inside the front axel or maybe the transfer case. But the way you described it I would start with the front axel.

Does the vehicle still have 4 wheel drive... or is it just the light that isn't working. I don't mean to insult you, I'm just asking if that's the case. You may just have a burnt out light. Most of these lever shift transfer cases are pretty straight forward, they either work, or they're so busted up inside that they make terrible noise.

Check to make sure any vacuum hoses and or wires are in tact going from the transfer case to their endpoints. You could also have a faulty automatic lockout hub.

On a 2007 chevy silverado 4x4 when going out of 4high to 2 wheel high the rear axle locked up but i would back up and would not lock up NOW after backing up 1/2 mile it doesnt lock up going forward

I am not familiar with the model. I wonder does it have differential locks? If it does, that could be the trouble.

In order for an axle to lock there must be some fairly serious trouble with it - something broken inside.

It is impossible to drive a true 4 wheel drive vehicle on a hard surface because the front wheels (in a forward motion) always travel a greater distance than the rear wheels which results in wind-up between the axles.
When such things as crude old army vehicles had to take to the road they would be forced to stop periodically and one wheel would have to be jacked off the ground to relieve the wind-up before they could continue.

Regular road-going 4x4s have a unidirectional clutch fitted in the front drive to allow the front wheels to overrun the rears without wind-up. When diff-locks are engaged a road-going 4x4 becomes a true 4x4 and axle wind-up becomes likely.

From your description I speculate it did not get out of 4-wheel high but instead engaged the diff-locks and it became a true 4x4 and you experienced axle wind-up, something travelling in reverse will relieve.
I further speculate the fault has since corrected itself. It remains to be seen whether it was a one-off glitch...

The front end of my four wheel drive 1984 Chevy custom deluxe half ton pickup won't work. I heard a pop while driving and all of a sudden the front end of the four wheel drive wasn't working.

Is it both front wheels or just one? This will help work out where the problem is. If it is just one wheel, the problem is between the wheel and the front Differential (Diff).
(The fat bit in the middle of the front axle).
If it is both wheels, the problem is the Diff itself OR further back up the system. Parts like the drive shafts, linkages and the centre transfer box. Go see a good 4 wheel drive specialist. That'll be the easiest way to sort it out.

I have a 2001 Chevy siverado pickup and the 4x4 doesnt work, but the four high and four low indicatoer lights on dashwork, and flash for a moment and then go solid, but i have no four wheel drive.Jacked it...

you need to stop both front wheels from turning to see if 4 wd is working
just stopping one side means nothing as the diff action is operating and making the opposite wheel go faster

The 4 wheel drive with a turn knob control will

take the four wheel drive actuator out of the front differential let it hang while still plugged in and have somebody watch and see if it retracts when the 4 whell drive is switched from 2 to 4 whell drive. If not then accuator is probably bad.
