2001 Oldsmobile Alero Logo

I have a 2001 oldsmobile alero. V6 115k. The other night the colant tank cracked and my car overheated. I replaced the colant tank but it is still overheating. When i was putting the new colant tank in the put a screw driver in one of the hoses and it was brown and really chunky. Could my lines just be clogged and its not getting to the radiator or is it my radiator?

Check your oil and make sure it's not milky. If it is do not drive it. Get it to the shop as you may have a blown head gasket. Happens easily if you run it overheated for a period of time.

2001 Oldsmobile Alero. How to change the head gasket on it please?

Can I replace a head gasket myself?

Head gasket replacement is not a job for the average do-it-yourselfer. While a head gasket expiring due to old age is rare, it usually means everything else is worn out to the point of replacement as well. Cracking the head off the engine and peering inside may reveal that everything else got fully cooked, too.

2001 Oldsmobile Alero, Overheating, no visible leaks, oil not milky, coolant mysteriously vanishes?

Well, I hate to break this to you but your coolant is leaving through your exhaust pipe. You may have a bad head gasket or your engine block may be cracked. Coolant is leaking into the cylinders and burning off when the engine fires and exiting through the exhaust.

It keeps overheating and the coolant is full

Sounds like the radiator is clogged. Take it to radiator shop and have it flushed

I have a 2001 Oldsmobile Alero. For the second time in a year my car has been overheating. The first time the problem actually went away after a few days before I even had the pressure tested. This was...

First the reason the heater is not working is because there is air in the system and these engine are known to trap air. There is a bleeder at the top of thermostat housing to remove the air.Take the radiator cap off while the engine is off and cold and add coolant/water mixture till fluid streams from bleeder screw(will need to be removed) then tighten screw and install radiator cap.Let it idle and see if it over heats and pay attention to the cooling fan operation and heater operation. If it does not overheat after 20 minutes the take it for a drive and see if it overheats.I fit does not overheat idling but does overheat driving you have a bad radiator.Dexcool is great for pugging radiators and heater cores. It is possible to flush the radiators and fix sometimes but new ones are not that expensive.I would probaly replace. If it overheats idling and fans are working suspect a bad thermostat.Good Luck!

Car running hot after changing water pump

A couple of things that are problems on Alero's are the waterpump, thermostat and the overflow tank.

The thermostat can be stuck closed, so the engine isn't cooling. The overflow tank can crack on the bottom of it, leaking fluid out....BUT, you would notice this if you checked your driveway or your fluid is low. Are the fans cycling on and off like they're supposed to? If it's none of these, I'd look at possibly a new radiator.

2001 Oldsmobile Alero Temperature goes high - alarm sounds - steaming from under hood. Losing coolant. Have already replaced the Temp Sending unit, the Thermostat, and the Water Pump.

I would have someone pressure test the cooling system to determined if there is an external or internal leak somewhere as it sound like you have one or the other. An internal leak, such as a head gasket, won't show up as a dripping coolant but will cause coolant to be forced out of the coolant reserve tank in a kind of bubbly burp as the engine warms up while an external leak usually can be spotted by following the trail of leaking coolant back to it's source. I would suggest having it checked out as soon as possible as serious engine damage can result from even a fairly short time spent overheating.
