2000 Nissan XTerra Electrical Probs

My 2000 XTerra wouldn't start this morning. Asumed it was the battery since it wouldnt crank. I took it to Sears to exchange the battery but they tested the battery and told me it was good. Put the battery back into the car and still wont crank. When I turn the key to crank strange things happen. Sometimes the door locks open and shut, wipers run, lights flicker, etc. Other times I get nothing but a click but starter never cranks. Is this a serious electrical problem? This is similar to when my battery went dead before but Sears swears the battery is good.

I was told by a loca mechanic that Nissa has had problems with electrical grounding for some time. Ii had a 1997 Altima that I intened to drive forever but finally gave up at (only) 90,000 miles. It went through 4 alternators in three years. Also a corroded radiator. The mechanic said Nissan has used the engine block as a ground, since cards today don't have the old-fashioned frame rails. Any loosening or other disturbance to that engine block ground will cause electriclaly-charged coolant to flow throughout the system: definition of elctrolysis. I don't if this applies to 2000-and-beyond vehicles, but it did in the 90s. Elsewhere in this section someone posted a ground solution (Maxima) that looks good. These are great vehicles, but if you have one (any make) with a persistent electrical glitch it can be one of the most frustrating and costly problems to fix.

Hi:
With your battery installed, turn on your head lights and see if they light up. If so, you most likely have a bad ignition switch.(not the key lock, but the actual switch )
It isn't a terribly expensive part, but will cause weird stuff if it fails.

2000 nissan xterra have brand new battery turn the key on no power to anything

If your 2000 Nissan Xterra has a brand new battery but there's no power to anything when you turn the key on, it's possible that there's an issue with the electrical system. Here are a few things you can check:
  1. Check the battery connections: Make sure the battery cables are properly connected and tightened. Loose or corroded connections can prevent the battery from supplying power to the vehicle.
  2. Check the fuses: Check the fuses in the fuse box to see if any are blown. If you find a blown fuse, replace it with a new one of the same amperage.
  3. Check the starter: If the starter is not working properly, it can prevent the engine from turning over. Listen for a clicking noise when you turn the key, which could indicate a faulty starter.
  4. Check the ignition switch: The ignition switch sends power to the starter and other electrical components. If the switch is faulty, it can prevent the vehicle from starting.
  5. Check the alternator: If the alternator is not working properly, it can prevent the battery from charging and supplying power to the vehicle. You can test the alternator using a multimeter.
If you are not comfortable performing these checks yourself, it's best to take your vehicle to a qualified mechanic or Nissan dealership for diagnosis and repair.

Sometimes the computer will have an intermittant glitch. Wait to see if problem reoccurs and monitor it based on engine start-up/run conditions. ( I. E.) Hot, Cold, Under A Load, Idling, Cruising.

For the past 2 weeks, when I try to start my 2003 Nissan Xterra, it seems sluggish, but the engine will turn over. On 2 separate occasions, when attempting to start the engine, it wouldn't turn over ...

Checked Cables how?

Looking & Touching isn't doing anything

You have to do a voltage drop test or remove
& clean the ends. I would do both

Remove the starter & have it tested at parts store,
assuming you don't know how to do a voltage or
current test while cranking.

Tries to turn over but will not crank. Electrical

If it is getting spark - it could be a fuse or relay for the fuel pump..
Or it could be the fuel pump..

Have a great day !

My car wouldnt crank this morning but the lights and everything still came on. like it wouldnt even turn over.

Check the battery cables, when you turned key to crank position did the lights go out? If yes, definately battery cables if no load test battery with a battery tester to see if it is any good.
