1995 mercury mystique heater died today. I smelt a little plastic burning when it happened. Since I got the car, the fan only works on high. Any suggestions?

I think you are looking for the fans resistor pack. It is usually in the blower fan housing need the blower motor and has a 4 or 5 wire plug on it. Be carefully it gets very hot when in use.
replace the fuel filter, first, if there is no check engine light, if that does not fix the problem ck the fuel pressure for possible fuel pump failure
i would first change the fuel filter with it being run low in fuel it may have picked up some trash off the bottom of the tank so change the fuel filter and see if it runs better
BELIEVE IT OR NOT I THINK ITS YOUR ALTERNATOR! THIS IS TYPICAL FOR THE MYSTIQUE OR SHOULD I SAY (MISTAKE). NOTHING YOU CAN DO , ITS AN ELECTRICAL DESIGN FLAW. THE CARS ARE TO ELECTRONIC FOR THEIR ALTERNATORS OUTPUT. OF COURSE THIS IS MY OWN ASSUMPTION. THEY ARE AN ELECTRICAL NIGHTMARE. HOWEVER I DID FINALLY FIX THE PROBLEM I HAD WITH MINE.( I SOLD IT!)
