I have a 97 dodge ram 1500 with an automatic transmission. For a year or so the four wheel drive has not engaged, and it has acted like it was slipping. I drove it for about 9 months until it went to having to shift it manual from 1st on up to D-drive. That same day it started throwing fits, it wouldnt shift above 2nd and on my way home from work it went out(meaning would not go into any gear) We recently changed the filter and added fluid and we now have only 1st and reverse. Help please! (to be honest i'm having the same sort of trouble as "fat_boy6718" did with his 1997)

On the axle there is a vacuum Actuator that engages a collar on the axle that engages the four wheel drive if the axel splines are worn or havent been lined up they will get burred and won't allow the collar to line up. You can remove the actuator and see the splines and determine if they need to be fixed.
