I have a 1997 4x4 chevy pickup with a 5.0 vortec. It is idling rough and running rich at idle and hesitates a little when accelerating but runs smooth with plenty of power when going down the road. Any ideas.

Going on the information you have provided it sounds to me like the fuel pressure regulator.It is located unthe intake manifold and is a lenghty job to do and is exspensive to have done.If you have a good mechanical ability it can be done by yourself in about 4-5 hours.and cost about $100 bucks.

It is probably time to replace one or both and in the case of some Ford's four Oxygen sensors.

Do you know if the plugs were changed, a bad or broken plug will also cause rough idle and slow acceleration?

try fuel injectors....run a bottle or two with full tank through it and see if that dont solve the problemo.....

I think you must have the carburettor plunger not going well as you are getting flat spots under sudden acceleration, I think the best way to go is to get the carburettor overhauled.
