Hi, I own a 2001 Olds Alero. Sometimes the engine

Hi, I own a 2001 Olds Alero. Sometimes the engine will catch once and then shut off - and won't want to start again. A mechanic said that the car probably is not recognizing the key code and is implementing the ignition security system. I would like to see if I leave the key in the partial ''on'' position for 10 mins (then let it sit for half an hour,)to see if it will reset itself. For this car do you know if I need to leave it on 10 mins then off ONCE, (then 1/2 hour rest,) or on/off THREE-10 minute intervals (then 1/2 hour)? Thank you very much! Diane

To reset the pas-loc turn the to on position 10 to 15 min.then turn the key off for a few seconds, then start the car/if your security light is on do this like i said for 10 to 15 minutes.the light should go off, then turn the key off and wait a moment then start it,you dont have to wait the 1/2 hour out

I have a 2001 Olds Alero. The transmission was working fine and I sat it on a hill for quite a while and now it does not shift properly. Sometimes it will not shift, however when it does it will work fine...

Unfortunately you now probably have a sticking solenoid in the transmission, but you also may have an oil pump problem in the transmission. These are expensive repairs, so I would try having the transmission oil replaced and perhaps adding an additive recommended for this.

Engine size of 2001 olds alero

Common engine size is the 3.4 V6 on the Alero but there was also a optional 2.4 liter I4 available. The V6 will have stamped in the engine upper intake 3400.
Thank you for using fixya and good luck.

2001 Olds Alero -- The service Engine Soon light is on. Car has 22K miles. Any Ideas on the most logical problem? Is there a reset so that I can check if it is just a fluke. Vern Dale

Hi Vern,
Get behind the fuse box on the side (L) door; remove the cover, turn the key on, but don't turn on engine.
Push red button and hold for a couple of seconds, and you'll hear a "beep". When it beeps 3 times, push the button in and it'll reset.
I have a 2001 Olds (Alero), and have done thiis a few times.
Do you have an Owner's Manuel? That's how we fig. out...

Good luck!

2.4 olds alero enging stumble

The two most likly causes of your Idle problen are, low fuel pressure. try installing a new fuel filter. Or the other one is the Air Idle control valve, can cause the exact problem you discribed with a cold engine. Fuel Injection engines do not have a choke like carburated engines do. So the idle is computer controled thru the Air idle control valve.
