Is the thermostat on my 01 golf turbo behind the alternator? Do I have to pull the intake manifold to change it?
Depends on the engine, but it is generally located behind the 2 bolt flanged fitting that bolts to the block, where the top radiator hose leads to.
With respect to the car, if tends to be in the front (side) of the engine, under the intake and exhaust manifolds. Not easily found, and access may be better from the bottom of the car.
Let me know what engine, and I can describe it better.
I've got the Bentley book right here, it's located almost centered on the front (side) of the engine.
If I remember correctly, I reached it from underneath the car. I changed the stat, water pump, and timing belt on a 2001 Beetle that I had.
Why do you think your stat is bad?
Go in from the bottom! I did not take the alternator off when I did this.
You might also replace the flanged piece. They are prone to leakage over time, as is the one at the driver side (end) of the engine, which is buried.
You stated word for word what the Bentley manual says about a "stuck open" thermostat.
Sadly, the Bentley is pretty much lacking when it comes to thermostat replacement. I've got the CD too, but Bentley changed their format a few years back, and I didn't want to pay to upgrade. I actually just sold the car a few weeks back, so really have no need for my Bentley manual or the CD's (which are useless.).
Take a stab at removing the alternator to see if you can access. But I don't think you'll have to take either manifold off. I know I didn't when I did my Beetle.
Let me know how it works out for ya.

its a 1.8l turbo
The temp gauge goes to the normal position while idling but drops way down once I hit the highway. Its also very slow to heat which sucks when you live in canada. I think I can see where it should be but it looks like I have to remove the alternator to get at it or the intake. Im sure that it is at the engine end of the top rad hose but this is a dirty place to get at. Any tips?? Thanks for the help
do you have the manual digital or on paper.I looked from undeneath but it still looks pretty rough. Does the book mention removing anything other than the two bolts holding it to the block
thank you very much
