1999 intrigue GLS 3.5- Runs rough. The guy I got it from was told the cat convert was bad so he gutted it. Still runs rough. I took it to Autozone and the codes read "bad cranshaft position sensor" and "multiple cyl misfire". I pulled the sensor and the wires have been very hot and were bare at the plug. Some may have been touching each other. I repair the wires as best I could and retried it. Still bad. I purchased a new sensor, still bad. I now have the plugs out and tested the compression. All are above 120 but the rear three are around 140-150. I am goingto change the plugs and little rubber boots. Is there something else that can cause the rough running, high idle then drops to almost nothing and sometimes dies, no power and must be held at high idle to drive?

Try the cheapest Fixes first 1) change the air filter. 2) change the fuel filter. Add 1 can of B&G44K to a full tank of 91 octane fuel. This additive is the best on the market and only available through dealerships(Do not substitute). It will condition the fuel pump and injectors. Try this first, Then redo the ODBII test. Erase all stored faults after reading. Put a dab of RTV on the bare wires at the crank sensor to insulate wires.

SOURCE: I have a 1999 oldsmobile

fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail is probably it or the egr valve is stuck open allowing burnt fuel to flood the intake, im leaning towards the fuel pressure regulator because the o2sensor is probably reading rich or if its reading lean then i would choose the egr valve . good luck

1999 ford explorer stalling idling rough converter smoking

Check engine light is supposed to flash if there is a problem...what code are you getting?? Converter smoking may mean that its plugged, try removing the o2 sensor before the cat and see if it runs better. Scan it, and get me a code !! If you don't have a scan diagnostic too most auto part stores will let you borrow one, if you leave your drivers license.

Getting running to rich and running to lean

The cleaner will not work and the guy that told you that is only qualified to ring up merchandise. You most likely have a bad O2 sensor or you could have an issue causing the engine to run incorrectly on that bank, like needing a tune up, a bad injector or an air/vacuum leak. People often make the mistake of taking advice from parts guys, they know parts not problems, don't let them mess you up with bad advice.

When starting and stopped, the engine runs rough and at times shuts down. Took it to autozone, code P0743, what is this.

This is an electrical issue with the torque converter solenoid valve. Maybe the electrical harness would have been short circuited or loosened.

There should be no difference in using an OEM or aftermarket cat to the O2 sensors-as long as it fits with no leaks, it will do exactly what an OEM cat would do, with a significant savings. When the pipes are dropped behind the cats, inspect for 'clogging'-although it does happen, your cats behind your 4.6 are not as prone to breaking up as the earlier generations of catalytic converters, so look yourself for proof that they are damaged. If you do replace the cats, the rear sensors only monitor the cats thenselves they do NOT affect the way the engine runs at all. You are being sold a bill of goods in my opinion.

1999 miata has check engine light on. i turned it off and it stayed out for about a month. took to autozone had two codes exuast and cat. converter. whats wrong with this car?

exhaust doesnt sound like a code, there should be more to code than cat or exhaust, the cat code is probably like cta efficencey below thrushold. this means the converter is not working, the cause maybe bad cat or bad oxygen sensors, testing may be needed to see if o2 sensors are working good. the exhaust code i dont know, never heard of exhaust code, they may be caused by the same problem, start with the cat code, have o2 sensors (oyxgen sensor) checked or if over 100,000 miles replace them. if converter is bad it a very good thing to also replace the o2 sensors with the new cat.

Would ignition coil problem cause 2001 Intrigue to misfire?

Not hard at all. Seven bolts and one connector. No computer work. But you need to know if it is the front coil or back coil. Front coil for cylinders 2, 4, 6. Rear for 1, 3, 5.

If O2 sensor is bad it can cause Rough running. Are you sure it is the O2 sensor ratteling? Have you taken it out to hear Rattle? Is it loose? I have not Hears an O2 Sensor rattle. I have heard Converters Rattle. over time Inner Material of converter will Not have a tight fit due to heating and cooling. expanding and contracting. carses some of the material to wear away. Causing the it to rattle. and can cause rough running also.

Along the line of cat converters, you should do a visual inspection of your oxygen sensors. they could be bad or causing it. They monitor your exhaust and then adjust the fuel mixture accordingly
