I have a 2000 Nissan Altima. For a couple weeks, my car has been running funny; juddering a little when I'm idling, and little pops which seem to be coming from the tailpipe area. It was also squeaking (like a rusty wheel) for a while, on and off, but that has since stopped. My engine light has been on for about a week, and today I had a guy from Auto Zone plug the computer in, and it said that the car is running lean, but since it was a manufacturer code, it couldn't tell him why. I believe the code was 1116 or 2116 or something along those lines; does anyone know what this means? I'm really hoping it's just the oxygen sensor, and not the computer like it was with my last car (especially cause I just bought this car 3 months ago!!!!) I'm going to go see a mechanic about this tomorrow, but I wanted to gather information before I go since I'm a girl and 70% of the mechanics I've been to have tried to take advantage of me.

Make sure you are looking up the code properly. 1283 for Nissan indicates a lean condition on bank 2. See link below. A vacuum leak is likely, but make sure the new sensor is recalibrated. Did you perform the relearn procedure after replacing the sensor? If not, see the second link below. If you ran the relearn procedure and cleared all codes but 1283 comes back, look for a loose vacuum line or leaky intake manifold gaskets. Classic engine miss. The cause might be a faulty injector, or more likely an issue with ignition. Start it at night in the dark and look for arcing- that is the area to start. Plug wires and ignition components.
I would start with the o2 sensor first if its not working right it will set off the knock sensor but beware of vaccum leaks sounds like your running lean
Sounds like you have a broken, leaky intake gasket. Spray some carb cleaner out of a spray can at the injector rail while the car is at idle and listen for any audible change in idle or in the way the car runs. Let me know what you find.
I have a 2001 Nissan Altima and mine did the same thing. We replaced the intake gasket. It costs around $5.50, but it requires several different kinds of tools. We spent over $100 in special sockets, etc. But once you replace that gasket, it will idle better.
I would check your intake gasket. Get your self ome carb cleaner in a spray form/can and perfrom this test. Run the car and spray the carb cleaner on your intake gasket which is right by your injectors. So pretty nuch spray it at the injector rail and listen fot change in idle, If the idle changes, the intake gasket is torn and you are running lean, because of a vaccum leak. Common problem on your model car. Perform test and let me know what you find.
