2002 Hyundai Elantra 100k miles - 2.0l - running rough

The engine starts up and revs to about 3k rpm for about 5 seconds, then drops down to 500 rpm and chugs like its starved for fuel.

When I give it gas, it will rev up smoothly, but then it looses it and the rpm drops down again. If I hold the gas down, it will just rev up and down in 5 second intervals.

Its below freezing outside... it doesn't seem like an electrical problem would cause this behavior. Could it be water in the fuel?

    I checked the codes... po455, po452, po442, po449.

I believe all of these have to do with my charcoal canister problem.

    Thank you.

Update: After putting fuel injector cleaner in it and driving it a few miles, the problem cleared up for 3-MONTHS. Now it is doing the same thing again.

Until it is warmed up, it stumbles and misfires.

Codes: Previous codes were due to a charcoal canister that I have since replaced. The current codes are: -p0301-p0303-p0304 misfire on cylinders 1-3-4
    -P0171 running lean
    -p1166 ???

    It has specific symptoms:

-With steady presure on the gas pedel the engine revs up and down... though this seems to have gotten better since we added fuel additive.

-It idles at barely less than 500rpm and shakes. You can hear a misfire. Then when you push on the gas, it chugs then stalls. When done correctly, you can pump the gas pedal to get the engine to go above 1500rpm at that point, it seems to run OK... though you can still hear a random misfire.

Sometimes while idling you push on the gas pedal and the RPMs wont fall back down.

It still drives around. Once it is warmed up, you can get it to go from a stop by slowly pushing on the gas pedel as it chugs up to a higher rpm.

Thanks for your help : )

Check engine light on,running rough code P0172

When I see all these codes i instantly think of two things. Vacuum leak especially intake manifold gaskets and Mass air flow sensors. Spray the engine with carb cleaner when its running and see if you get it to rev up,run rough or run different. Next unplug the MAF and drive the car, see if it runs normal.

I have 2002 audit quattro TT with 180k miles. When I do a normal acceleration the car surges and rpm drop but pick back up. If I accel hard it runs fine. Also at idle at times it varies 200 rpm like a

this sounds similar to a problem i had. as the rpm went over 2000 the engine would stop for a split second and then kick back in.
after a few days looking my garage finally found the problem was a faulty air mass meter.
this cost me £200 in total to be repaired.

2003 Tiburon GT, RPM's drop way down and idles rough at stop's?

More maintenance history needed. Oil changed regularly, timing belt replaced at 60 K miles, Engine air filter & intake air hose inspection?
Causes of the problem you describe are many. Recommend you have a technician check your throttle position sensor for any bad spots in the potentiometer... most likely cause when there is NO Check Engine light.

Low idle, also engine runs alittle ruff after fill-up.

Sounds like the fuel pump is starting to go, the problem after fill up is most always related to a failing pump. The other issue may be a dirty throttle valve.

Engine high rev at stop and slowly goes to idle speed.

I've got Hyundai Lantra 1.6 year 2000. It's take time to start when it's hot. When I start my car it revs at about 2k-3k rpm. It also does it when I come to a stop. When I come to a stop it will stay at a higher rpm than that of idle speed. It drives ok when on freeway but uses more petrol. I have changed the water & petrol pump but no luck
