My Daughter's 1998 Chevy Cavalier had an indicator light come on. She thinks it's an Oil Light. (Has an Arrow Pointing Down?)

It's the Coolant. I have the same car, same year and had the same indicator light come on - it was my Coolant.

    The manual does not show what the symbol means, but from my experience with this light it stands for Low Coolant. See the following image. If it looks like the one she is seeing then that is the issue.http://ww2.justanswer.com/uploads/oletim...

    My Coolant kept leaking and the issue ended up being a problem with my water pump. I had to get my water pump replaced and then my car worked properly. Hopefully your issue is a simple Low Coolant issue; if the coolant leaks check on your water pump.

Thank you so much. I’ve spent a couple of hours trying to figure out what that symbol means. It’s not in the 2001 Chevy Cavalier operators manual. It’s popping on and off. I did notice I was leaking coolant. The bad thing is I just replaced the water pump about 6 months ago. At least I have direction.

The light does it say Water? You are sure about this? Please have this checked by a mechanic asap,. if it is starting to run hot if you catch it early then you can avoid serious damage to the engine. The smell may be a leaking engine water pump or other component of the engines cooling sytstem.

this symbol usually indicates that the radiator is low on coolant. on some cars a similar light means low washer fluid. so check both of them.

That is your low coolant lamp. You should check your coolant level with the engine cold. Fill it with coolant if it is low, and inspect it, or have it inspected for a leak, or faulty coolant level sensor.
