That sounds like an exhaust problem, if your cat. converter is bad your vehicle will start but have loss of power and you will struggle to get to and above 2,000 to if your lucky 4,000 rpms.
A good way to tell is if you run your vehicle for an extended period of time (specially driving), you can get under the vehicle and you might actually see the exhaust system close to the converter is red hot.
Your truck can run without it but it will fail any emissions test you take, it is located between your headers (on the engine block) and exhaust piping under the vehicle.on.
Hope this helps and the cat. converter usually has a manufacturer 5 to 10 year warranty that will cover replacement, if not it should run around $500.00.

1997 dodge ram 3500 no power windows

If none are working...fuse, or relay. if just single window not working, that leans more toward individual switch.

Have a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500. Truck runs fine until it heats up and the termostat kicks in. It will not idle and the rpms go up and down between 300 and 1000 then stalls. When on the highway it runs fine...

likely your throttle position sensor or idle air control valve. Try disconnecting each one when the problem starts if it corrects you have found the culprit.

1997 dodge ram 3500, it shudders in OD

Hey, I also have a 98 ram with the cummins and what you are talking about is when you are pullin hard in overdrive the trans is working to hard causing the shudder, when this happens back off the throttle and get back on the throttle to allow the trans to downshift. If you dont it will break the overdrive gear. There is nothing wrong with the trans it is just that it is shifting to early and bogging down causing the shudder.
