There are several possibilities...do you have the light switch turned all the over for the interior lights? Is the switch at the liftgate broken so that the plunger does not go in to turn it off? There might be a short to ground at the switch if the hot is run to the light and the switch does the grounding?
Check all the fuses under the hood and under the dash. Then try having someone wiggle the liftgate while you "tap" the down button repeatedly. Do not apply too much force to the liftgate.
take a screwdriver and place it in the opening behind the metal piece ...apply light pressure against the metal piece as you pull the handle like you were opening the liftgate....this should allow the piece to flip open
