The timming is off it possibly needs a new timming chain or the spark plug wires are on wrong
It was the popping in the exhaust that made me think of that of course that could be just a loss of compression due to a bad converter. Some times with older vehicles guessing with some exsperience is all you have to go on.when it doesn`t seem to want to start try holding gas peddle to floor and crank it when and if it starts back peddle off most of the way. What i`m thinking is it could be loading up because of bad converter.
I don`t even have a converter on mine and there is no engine light on. Mine popped and made crackling noises every time i took my foot off the gas but since i put a new tail pipe and muffler on it doesn`t pop any more it was due to to much exhaust flow and not enough restriction. Before i can think of a solution i need to know if the when the car is not starting is it at least cranking ,that is trying to start or is it just sitting dead ?

I wrote "intermitently won't start". Problem can't be timing chain or wires not installed properly. When the
car starts it runs perfectly. I'm guessing perhaps crankshaft sensor or ignition module. Problem is, I don't want to guess.
Thank you for your input thus far. Obviously I don't know for sure either. When the car starts, it runs perfectly. For some reason, my Snap-On scan tool doesn't communicate with the ECM. I'm reluctant on the converter thought for two reasons. 1 - How well it runs when it does decide to start. 2 - the service engine light is not lit. I'm leaning towards either a defective crank sensor, or possibly an ignition module issue. Both I believe could cause an intermittent retarded spark. Didn't want to have to chang both. What do you think?
