The airbag is there, what's most likely wrong is the key switch may be going bad. Take your Ranger to a reputable mechanic and ask them to check it...unless you have an OBD II or a multimeter.
first, the starter is on the bottom of the engine toward the back and has a large wire from the battery attached to it. Second, if a mechanic said to hit it he is a pretty sorry mechanic who you should never let work on even your bicycle. Hitting a starter can damage it to the point it can't be rebuilt as it cracks the housing and wire loom assy inside. Sure, it might start a time or two like that but will cost you dearly in the long run.
