Slight metal shavings are in oil & minor oil sludge in 2001 chrysler sebring v6 2.7 engine & has random starting failure. Is it worth it to pay high price to replace water pump and timing kit?

i would say the metal is from the bearings. a timing chain would be a waste of effort at this point. if you get a used engine with 70000 miles or more, i would replace the water pump and probly the timing chain.if you get later model engine the flywheel and camshaft gear will have to be changed or it wont run.

Diagram timing of v6 engine of liberty 2001 model

that v6 engine has no timing adjustment. it has a timing chain. so if there is a stretch on chain, it must be replaced according to factory service manual. only thing you need to watch is to mark the position of gears before you remove chain. also timing of ignition is maintained by engine controller. if you need a custom setup you need chip tuning for that.

Diagram timing of v6 engine of liberty 2001 model

2001 , no such ani-mule !
"Introduced for the 2002 model year as a replacement for the Cherokee (XJ),"
you meant manufactures date not model and reg. date. sure.
2002 !
3.7L V6 (cop spark ) chain drive cams....
timing ( cam or spark?)
"Ignition timing is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). No adjustment is possible"
so Cam timing (alldata.com covers this in detail)
why not post the context, Im doing what.?
im doing a 60k belt swap
or it slipped. or think id did.
or just put in a new head or cam? see , context is 100% important.
im here, going to there.....
im on line, and it shows 4 engines, i think that is wrong, but...

you must be asking chain cam sprocket timing.
im at alldata.com (or FSM)
there are 37 install steps, im not sure what step you want me
to pluck out. but here is my guess. step 8 ,9,10
  1. Install both secondary chains onto the idler sprocket. Align two plated links on the secondary chains to be visible through the two lower openings on the idler sprocket (4 o'clock and 8 o'clock). Once the secondary timing chains are installed, position special tool 8429 to hold chains in place for installation.
  2. Align primary chain double plated links with the timing mark at 12 o'clock on the idler sprocket.
  3. Align the primary chain single plated link with the timing mark at 6 o'clock on the crankshaft sprocket.
step 12:
Install all chains, crankshaft sprocket, and idler sprocket as an assembly . After guiding both secondary chains through the block and cylinder head openings, affix chains with a elastic strap or equivalent. This will maintain tension on chains to aid in installation. Align the timing mark on the idler sprocket gear to the timing mark on the counterbalance shaft drive gear, then seat idler sprocket fully . Before installing idler sprocket bolt, lubricate washer with oil, and tighten idler sprocket assembly retaining bolt to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).

step 13:
  1. Align left camshaft sprocket "L" dot to plated link on chain.
  2. Align right camshaft sprocket "R" dot to plated link on chain.

step 15/16
  1. Remove Special Tool 8429, then attach both sprockets to camshafts. Remove excess oil from bolts, then Install sprocket bolts, but do not tighten at this time.
  2. Verify that all plated links are aligned with the marks on all sprockets and the "V6" marks on camshaft sprockets are at the 12 o'clock position.

do ask questions, or login to alldata.com or mitchels
or get a real FSM.
its nothing trivial.

in fact get the book before the job. so are perpared.

Timing Chain Marks Toyota V6 4 Liter

Before you remove any thing place the engine on no 1 firing on the timing mark on the bottom pulley. when removing any thing after that do not turn the engine or the cam shaft and every thing will stay in order.; You will probably see the position of the marks in this position.

I just put a timimg chain an water pump in a 2001 chrysler sebring 2.7 liter engine an it will back firer at start up an not run .no matter how many times i check timing marks everytime it seems to no

I just recently experienced the same problem. The timing is 180 degrees out. Unfortunately the only way to correct it is to take the engine apart again. Set the right hand camshaft to TDC by using the marks on the timing gear for that bank. The left will follow to the degree it can although you will have to manually hold the cam in position when you put the timing gear back on. Now you can remove the timing chain. The crank TDC indicator may not be right on but it will be close. Rotate the crank CW one revolution to the point the TDC marks are lined up. Now install the timing chain according to the instructions. The timing gears on the camshafts will only go on one way as the bolt holes are slightly off the extreme diameter of the gear. If you put the chain back on making sure that all the marks are proper, she'll fire on the second cylinder up. Not a fun job I know, but when everything works right, you do get a sense of satisfaction.

The marks on timing chains are usally identified by links.
The side-link that is almost silver in appearance is the 'timing-mark'.

Removing the 2.7 engine from 2001 sebring sedan?

ok heres the simple version its alot of work
remove hood put someplace safe
disconnect all wireing and mark off with masking tape and marker
****** you need car lift ******
remove all plastic part molding from engine
find the engine hoist holes for chain to hook to
this is a unibodi design so the whole front chassis drops down
unbolt the chassis make sure to have the chasis blocked and stable
lift car while chasis stays on floor engine tranny and every thing inside hood comes down on the unibody this is how you remove an engine from a sebring

or you take to the dealer spend the doe cause you got a nice car and have it done right
