2002 impala - service vehicle soon light appears at random intervals. put a code scanner on the car and no codes returned. opening/closing trunk seems to make message disappear....what is going on?

To find out why you need to have code's checked .

Yes it may be the wires are shorting or its actually the problem with instrument cluster.
Also get the vehicle scanned for any error codes stored in computer this will confirm whether is short circuit issue or actual problem:------

Fan 1 controll circuit no dtc definition not found refer to vehicle service manual is what my scanner says but you will need to have the car put on an OBD//EOBD scanner to check it out properly

You will need a OBD II scanner to erase the code from the ECM.

you have a problem somewhere in vehicle. put a obd 2 scanner to read codes, and after fixed the check engine light can be turned off with scanner. if no access to scanner, any auto parts place will scan car for no cost. especially at auto zone. carl,

This is a light which indicates that the odometer mileage is approaching a service interval. The service intervals are in the owner's manual.

The concept is you take the vehicle to the shop for routine preventive maintenance (and the mechanic resets the light until the next service interval approaches).

These two events are probably not related. The serviceengine-soon light just means that the vehicle mileage is approaching a service interval.

The concept is when this comes on the vehicle is taekn to the shop for its routine service and the mechanic resets the light.

If you have an owner's manual you'll find the service intervals -- the mileage is approaching one of those intervals.

Radios in the 2004 Impalas are tied to the vehicle's VIN through the computer, so it may be somewhat difficult to get the code. However, the following steps should work:

1. Press and hold the buttons for presets 1 & 4 (may be 2 & 3). The word "SEC" should show.
2. Press the "MIN" button. "000" should be displayed.
3. Press the "MIN" button again to have the second two numbers appear. Record these numbers.
4. Press the "HR" button for the first two numbers to appear. Record these numbers. -- Note: Your number sequence should be the numbers from the "HR" button followed by the numbers from the "MIN" button.
5. Call 1-800-537-5140. This will get you to the GM unlock code automated line. Ignore the prompt and enter "202108#". Next enter your code (remember, HR then MIN) followed by the * key. For example, 1234*. A 3 or 4 digit code will be given to you. If you get a code such as 0532, drop the zero when entering it into your radio.
6. Enter the code into the radio IAW the applicable manual.
