Ok Then what will need to be done is that the assembly will need to come out. The backing is held by some pins or screws and will need to be removed. Now was backing is installed the glass can be installed afterwards as to avoid breaking mirror during installation.
The mirror or glass is usually "glued" to the backing with either good adhesive tape or silicon gel. There is nothing else holding it. Now if you are lucky enough, remove enough the the remaining mirror and see if by some chance you can remove backing by removing a couple of screws. Depending how much of the backing is broken this may help you..

Does the whole mirror assembly need to be removed just to replace the glass and backing? How do you actually get the backing and glass removed from the assembly?
Ok first let me ask, do only need to repace the mirror because it is broken or cracked.
