I'VE GOT A SIMPLE SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM!
August 16, 2012
My Mother-in-law has a 2004 Saab 9-3 convertible, she wasn't able to find a fix for this problem because the plastic bracket that holds the door cable in place on the inside of the door panel broke off and it's actually part of the door panel itself. Since the bracket broke, pulling on the inside door handle would no longer pull the cable that's need to open the door.
She was out of luck and had to roll the window down to use the outside door handle to exit the car (that gets annoying really fast).
Basically without rigging it, she would've needed a replacement door panel because of this ridiculos design flaw (around $600 + installation if you could even find the panel, she couldn't because Government Motors SUCKS!) .
I simply used an L bracket that I had (can find it at any Home Depot, Lowe's etc.) and used two sets of channel lock pliers to bend it into a "squared" J shape. I then drilled 2 holes into the inside metal door frame and used 2 sheet metal screws to secure the bracket to the door frame. To make sure that I mounted the new and improved bracket that I created in the proper location (not too much or too little slack). I simply made a template with a sheet of paper by tracing where the old molded plastic bracket was in relation to the two screw holes of the door panel ( actually had to mount the bracket about an inch forward to make up the difference since the bracket is no longer attached to the door panel).
I also had to drill the **** in the bracket a bit to make sure the cable wouldn't get hung up on it when pulled, but in all it only took 15 mintues to redesign GM's crappy design.
Here are 2 pictures, hope this will solve your issue with your broken handle.
I don't know why the pictures didn't post, I'll try again.
Apparently this site sucks as much as GM! Pictures didn't load and I can't waste anymore time to figure out how to upload them. If you contact me for the pics, remind me that they're in my July 7,2012 folder (pics #'s 377 & 378). Good luck!
Hey there,

Remove door panel and disconnect linkages remove handle replace with new
SOURCE: 1999 Toyota Corolla interior door handle
There's two screws by the handle, pull those out and you'll see how it all connects on the inside. I was able to remove my broken one, and drill a hole into the plastic where it broke and reuse it - it's lasted over 4 years now.

did you just break the handle or did you break it off from inside the door also? If it is only from the outside that is a much easier fix. Let me know what the issue is and I will try to help you as easy as possible.
SOURCE: How do you replce broken door handle?
This is a problem that you should be able to fix. With the interior door panel there are 3 screws. 2 in the arm rest and 1 on the door handle(opener), take those out. There is a C-clip on the window crank that needs to be removed. They make a cheap little tool to remove those but I've heard people using a shop rag and removing the c clip. To remove it, turn crank to around 9 oclock then slide the tool or rag behind the crank also coming from 9 oclock. Any position will work, my point being the tool must slide in from behind the crank handle. Use a flat head screwdriver to gently pry the edges of the door panel away. There are some little clips that pop loose. It's okay if some break you can buy more. After that you will slide the door handle (opener) forward a little to pop out. Twist and turn the panel to get it over the door handle. There are 2 bolts that hold the handle on from the inside. They are 10 mm. You can reach the most forward one pretty easy but the back one is taken out through a hole in the metal door panel. Mine had a sticker over the hole with a big yellow dot on it. After that it takes some pretty good force to get the handle out of the hole. Don't be afraid to push on it. When it pops out take some wire cutters and cut the little plastic clip that holds the metal rod to the handle. The lock twists out of the hole. Now this is when you need 3 hands. Hold the new handle close to the opening and twist the lock into position. Don't attach the metal rod yet. Now actually put your key in the lock. This helps you hold the lock in the correct position while inserting the handle. Put the top of the handle in first and then the bottom should snap in next. Now from the inside, reach up and slide metal rod in the hole and rotate the plastic clip to secure it. Now the hardest thing is getting that back bolt in. It helps again to leave the key in the lock and rotate it so the bolt can secure the locking mechanism to the handle. Put the front bolt in reinstall the interior door panel and you should be in business. Good Luck

you must carefully pop off the door plastic clips using a screwdriver and prying gently until they pop out , also remove the screws under any small round plastic screw cover inserts and in the plastic door handle area
SOURCE: how do I take off the door panel to replace a
Door handles are fairly easy to replace, you may even be able to do it without removing the door panel. Look closely at the door handle, you will see a Philips head screw, remove this. Gently remove the faceplate to the handle. Behind the faceplate you will see another Philips head screw, (don't get the two mixed as they are slightly different in size) remove the second screw. Now heres where it gets a little tricky. The handle has to slide forward about a quarter of an inch before it can be tilted out enough to see the clips that retain linkage for the lock and latch, you can't get them mixed up because they are bent in opposit directions. You may need to use a pair of needle nose and a small screwdriver to work the clips up and out of the way so the link rods can be removed. Once you see how they come off it will be easier to replace. After replacing the handle and getting the clips back in place, position the handle back in place being careful to align the 3 slots that will lock it in place, then slide it back into position until you can see the hole for the first screw (which is the last one removed. Replace the screw, just don't tighten it to much, it only screws into plastic. Then work the cover back in place and replace the screw.
If you need to remove the panel, look the door over and find the 6, I think that's how many there are, screw covers, 2 on each end of the door liner and 2 under the door handle. The ones on the otter edge''s of the doors have a little plastic cover (about 1/4 inch in diameter). They pop out with a sharp knife or very small screwdriver. You might want to check along the bottom for additional screws I ma have forgotten. Once all are removed you can pry the door out at the bottomfirst, then gently work the panel back and forth to lift it until it clears the window section. That should do the job at this point. Good luck to you.
