My car has a diff whining noise. I am going to sell the car and don't want to spend a lot of money on it, as I plan to buy a new car in six months of so.

You don't say what type of car you have and what mileage it has run so far.

Most likely the whine is from a very worn pinion gear.

Other than replacing or rebuilding the diff there is nothing you can do other than drain the old diff oil and replace it with new oil. ONLY use the manufacturer specified differential oil in the correct grade. This may quieten the noise a little but any difference will be minimal. It may help extend the life of the worn diff a little and it will get rid of any debris suspended in the old diff oil..

The diff drain plugs are often magnetic to pick up metal to prevent it being recirculated so check if there is much in the way of metal filings on the drain plug when it is removed.

Without disassembling the diff no one can tell you how long it may last but they are expensive to replace so I would be replacing the vehicle sooner rather than later if you don't want to replace the diff.

Until you sell the car, drive it gently when moving off from a stop and when accelerating to minimise stress on the diff.

If you are going to replace the diff oil yourself the car will need to be level and ensure you loosen and remove the diff oil filler plug before you remove the oil drain plug. If you drain the oil and the filler plug is stuck you will be in trouble. It will be a lot easier to just buy the correct diff oil and take the car to a reliable mechanic to drain and refill the diff for you while the car is up on a lift/hoist.

Is it just open drain plug and refill or is there aproblem of air pockets the tranny is 4x4 with transfer box in same housing

there is no need to blead air from the gearbox or transfer, or diff's
first the transfer and gearbox are together but use their own oils and are changed seperatly
remove the drain plug to drain, refit then refill through the filler flug, the correct level is thesame as the filler so when starts draining from the filler hole its full. car needs to be level/flat ground when doing this.
if its auto there will be a tube for checking the level, at the back of the engine under the bonnet. auto trans oil does need the engine running to check for correct level.
remove drain plug with the engine off, refill approx same amount of oil in to the dipstick tube, then start the engine, select each gear for a couple of secconds then back to neutral, check level with engine still running. adjust level if needed.

Where is the drain plug and filler plug for the rav 4 automatic gear box please

Underneath the transmission there is a 14mm bolt, that is the drain plug, and Toyota doesn't have serviceable transmission filters, the filter is made of metal and is seal.

My rav 4 diff needs topping it its making a noise when i dirve can any body say where to do it

There is a filler plug in front of the right rear axle about center of the housing itself. Rmove plug and fill untill fluid begins to run out of plug. Do not overfill. More is not better will cause foaming damage to bearings and overheating.

Toyota rav 4

I work for Toyota, and I will be glad to provide you with the actual answer:

The RAV/4 product is available in two models, a 4WD model and a 2WD model.
The difference between the two is on the 2WD model, there is no driveshaft going under the vehicle to the rear wheels, and no rear differential. There is no "RAV/2"; both models are called RAV/4's.

There is a lot of common confusuion about how the 4WD works. It is full time 4WD. In other words, it is always in 4WD. It does not "kick in/kick out/automatically engage", or anything like that. It is 4WD all of the time. But, when I say "4WD", that is sometimes mistaken for "all wheel drive", and, in this case, the RAV/4 is not "AWD". What this means is that if you raise the RAV/4 up on a lift, and put it in gear, 1 rear and the other side front tires will spin. True "all wheel drive" would have ALL 4 wheels spinning. This is not the case with the Rav/4. What the RAV does have, making up for not having "True AWD" on the 5 speed model, however, is a switch that locks the center differential in the transfer case, which, when engaged, applies a method of "locking" the 4WD system for maximum traction, but it is still not AWD. The automatic version doe not have this ability.
The last "true AWD" vehicle for purchase was a 1970's International Scout.
If you are considering purchasing a RAV/4, that is a very good investement. They hold their value quite well, and are virtually bulletproof; I do not make any "money" off my RAV/4 customers...
Just "gas station work". Very nice cars. I hope that this helps you, please feel free to comment back with any otherr questions...Glad to be of assistance.
