I would suggest it is not the Fuel Pump because the car runs and drives. I would test the Ignition system and look for a fault in the Engine Control Module along with making sure the plug wires are not arcing across one another which can happen with old and dirty wiring. Assuming the ignition system is in proper order there is one part that is quite frequently overlooked and is not very expensive if you put it in yourself. The "Fuel Pressure Regulator" has been the culprit for more than one complaint like yours. The part varies in price but about $60.00 would be the going rate. Alas putting it in yourself would cost you that as having it done could cost closer to $400.00 as it is not exactly a quick job although not particularly difficult just not one to be done quickly.
check to see if the starter is ingaging or making a clicking sound when you have the hood up. If you do not hear the starter ingaging then its your starter but also you might have a ground issue too so use a multimeter if you know how and have one check things with this to see if there might be any short to the ground of car plus there might be bolts lose or missing as well you should check.
The best thing to do is call an auto parts store, they can tell you what you need.
They will need the year, the model, the size of the engine, if it has ac, power windows, seats, etc.
Underneath your hood, behind the passenger side headlight, behind the core support, is a bank of 2-8 relays. One of those relays is the relay needed for your fuel pump. There will also be a fuel pump relay fuse located there. The relay designation should be on the cover of the relay compartment.
