Oil light indicates one of two things, Low oil pressure. or Low oil level.
Check the level on the dipstick (consult owners manual), if it is low fill it to the "full" line with fresh oil of the correct grade.
Also the oil on the disptick should look syrupy golden, not black and dirty - if the oil looks filthy then get it changed, old oil is thinner and results in lower pressure...
if it is already at or near the FULL line then you have a more serious problem - low oil pressure is caused by a, faulty oil pump
b, worn engine
c, wrong grade of oil
d, not enough oil
e, contaminated oil
Also a faulty oil pressure switch could bring the light on... so check this before you have the engine stripped!!!!!
An oil change will cost very little money and could solve the problem,
if the light is still on with new oil then chave the oil pressure switch tested... if not the switch than it is a "real" engine problem and needs proper investigation.
IT IS NOT A GOOD IDEA TO DRIVE WITH THE OIL LIGHT ON
Unless you know it is an electrical fault and not truly a low oil pressure condition bringing on the light.
CHECK OIL - fill if necesary - light hopefully goes off...
STILL ON - have switch tested - switch is hopefully faulty - replace it...
STILL ON - have engine checked out - it is losing pressure somewhere
