I am sure you have checked the fluid level in the power steering pump, check to make sure your belt is tight, if you have a single belt, make sure it is not past the wear point and letting your pump slip. find your idler pully and on the front you will see a big nut, a spring, and a pointer (kinda small and square). if it has reached the end of its movement, your belt is warn. if all above are ok, then you may have a bad pump.

If I start my 1999 GMC Jimmy without the key will I be able to drive it without the steering wheel locking up on me

if you can turn the ignition to the run position it should not lock up on you. if you are starting it without turning the ignition it will probably lock the steering wheel.

Hard too turn

If your steering wheel is too hard to turn, the first thing you need to do is check the power steering fluid level, it should be more then the minimum level.

Hard steering..i have 98 gmc jimmy. after full left turn going down from ramp the steering stuck and hard to steer. i found out that there is leak in steering fluid and very low in gauge. i added fluid but...

turn car off turn steering wheel from left to right all the way each way for about 10 to 12 times with it full of fluid you have air in your system and that will bleed it out in most cases

1994 gmc jimmy steering wheel removal

Gently pop off the horn cap / cover.

There will be a short wire attached, so be careful not to pull it too hard.

You will see the wire going into the metal frame of the steering wheel.

The wire will go into a "sleeve". Push the sleeve in, and turn slightly counter-clockwise to unlock the connector. The horn will beep a few times as you pull the wire out, just to warn you :)

You will now need a steering wheel puller. These can be bought for about $10 at any auto parts store.

Once the wheel itself is off, you will see a black plastic disk. remove it. Now you will see a metal disk with notches in it (this is what locks the steering wheel when you turn the key off). You may want to get someone for assistance for this one, as there is a pretty stiff spring behind the disc, so use caution. You will need to push the disc towards the dash and remove the retainer clip.

Once that is off, you will see the white turn signal switch. Remove the hazard switch button first, then the turn signal lever retaing screw (be careful if it has cruise control, as the wires are thin and delicate), then remove the 3 phillips head screws holding the actual switch on. Let the switch hang out of the way.

Now, you'll see the lock cylinder retaining screw. This is where you may have a problem if you don't have a key.

After removing the screw, you MUST turn the ignition switch to the "run" position and pull out the assembly.
