Hi Adstew,
the front diff has a sensor telling the control unit it when it is engaged (or not). It probably is, and it won't disengage. or the sensor is stuck. The selector lever tells the control unit you want 2WD but the sensor thinks the front axle is engaged. So it flashes.
When shifting to 2WD, normally the front axle will come free after a load change or a bit of turning the steering from side to side, but it sometimes happens that it gets stuck. You can find out:
lift the car free off ground, then select drive forward in 2WD. If the front wheels do not turn, then the sensor may be faulty or stuck. if the front wheels turn in 2WD mode, the diff is stuck and the sensor tells you so. Same or similar problem can happen with the center diff, by the way, on pajero/montero, etc.
regards
Winfried, the perfessa

SOURCE: 2004 mitsubishi outlander cooling fans not operating

TAKE A PEEK UNDER THE HOOD IN THE FUSE PANEL FOR THE FUSE AND RELAY FOR THE COOLING FAN. IF THE FUSE IS BLOWN THEN REPLACE IT. IF YOU SUSPECT THE RELAY TO BE BAD THEN TEST IT BY SWAPPING THE FAN RELAY WITH ANOTHER ONE WITH THE SAME PINS ON THE BOTTOM. MAKE SURE IT IS THE SAME SIZE AS WELL. HOPE THIS HELPS.. PLEASE KEEP ME POSTED. THANKS FOR AN HONEST RATING AND FOR USING FIX-YA. GOOD LUCK

SOURCE: 4X4 green inidcator light flashes and ABS light

Hi, you will probably have to take to mitsubishi dealer and have them scan diagnostics....but sounds like the o ring has busted in transfer case. will it shift in and out of 4wheel drive? If not don't drive it...it will cause alot of damage.

How do i select 4 wheel drive on my 1996 2.8d mitsubishi challenger

Hi, On most modern 4WD there is lever which you shift in to 4H 4L 2H and N and on others there is a button to switch in to 4WD. Check to which one you have. You should also see a green or red indicator light showing up on your dash when you are in 4WD. Good luck.

Transfer case troubleshooting

This could be several issue. On my 2003, it was 2 of the 5 transfer case switches. It was explained to me that if the sensors get corroded, that the system doesn't know what 4WD mode your truck is in, causing it to lock into that mode. With my 2003, I caught it on a good day and moved my 4WD selector to AWD. That way, I could drive it on dry land as well as have some AWD capability in the rain and snow. It knocked my MPG down, but it worked for me. The cost to replace the 5 sensors (recommend replacing all b/c the labor is high due to having to drop the transfer case to get to the sensors on top) was around $800 at my local import dealer. Twice that price at the Mitsubishi dealer.

Hello Tarochan,

The first place to start is to retrieve any fault codes the on-board computer may have registered.

The flashing lamp you are seeing is alerting you to a possible problem with the braking system or a possible fault is occurring withing the IPS (Instrument Panel Cluster) itself.

So..the best advise I can give you is to have a mechanic do a scan check for fault codes. This may provide some idea as where to start looking for possible problems.

Pajeros have a air operated solenoid to disengage/engage the front hubs and centre diff lock. the solenoids themselves can stick if aged. to replace them is about $200 each (two or more of them). I found thata bit of WD40/ CRC soaking inside the airhoses and solenoides and enagge/disengage action of the hubs frees it up again. Do this while stationery in neutral and motor running. The solenoids are located inside the engine bay just behind the drivers side headlight. They will have some black rubber air tubes in/out of them. When you engage/disengage you should hear a little whirring and slight clunk and the hub locks/unlocks. If very aged, you may need to move the car forward/backward for the hub locking mechanisim to find its opening. Once disengaged, the orange light should go out. The aftermarket workshop manual by Max Ellery fully describes this process and is about $30 ON eBAY.

Mitsubishi challenger 04/05 wont start, has been

I would guess there is more than a single problem with your car. While sensors and worn spark plugs and other possible problems would cause bad starting and running, such things would rarely stop an engine. To stop an engine it mostly needs a fuel system failure, the loss of signal from cam/crank sensors or a failure of the supply to the computer or a failure of the computer itself, though immobiliser problems should not be ruled out.

It probably should be taken to the shop but please read the towing instructions in the vehicle handbook to avoid possible damage to the transmission.

Intermittent Flashing 4x4 Light

This was a weakness of the Montero Sport models. If you google Montero Sport 4WD light flashing you will find lots of information. The best troubleshooting article I have found is here: http://4wd.blogeasy.com/article.view.run?articleID=318776 This article is about the Pajero, but the Montero Sport uses the same platform so this article applies.

The Montero Sport uses several switches and vacuum modules to put the system in and out of 4WD. If any of these malfunction, the light may flash continuously, flash intermittently, fail to come on, and it can trigger the anti-lock brake light to come on. In brief, if the 4WD shift lever is engaged, but the transfer case doesn't engage, the sensors show a mismatch and will cause the light to act funny including triggering the vehicle's anti-lock break light. These SUV's need to be shifted into 4WD regularly to keep the switches and mechanisms working correctly.

Try this before you even think about a visit to the $$$$$ Mitsubishi Dealer:
Shift the 4WD lever between 4WD High, Low and 2WD at least 100 times. Often, this will free the mechanisms and resolve the problem. It worked for me after three years of trying everything else including the dealer replacing switches, etc. If this does fix it for you, just be sure to shift the vehicle in and out of 4WD several times at least one a week and this will keep the mechanisms lubricated and functioning correctly. If that doesn't work, try the above link (article). Good luck!

Jeff
