My buddy has a 89 pontiac sunfire. It sat for a while and he just started driving it, let the gas run out and put new in and then it stopped running. Today we sprayed starter fluid into the throttle and it started up. Let it ran for a bit, turned it off for a second and then cranked it up again. So I went ahead and replaced the fuel filter and poured some sea foam into the tank. I then primed the liine and then it cranked right up for about 5 seconds and died. Now its not starting. Fuel is going into the throttle and I can hear the fuel pump activating. Any ideas? Belts are all fine and plugs and wires are brand new

You could have a bad pump motor in your fuel pump. You will hear the "hum" of the pump motor but it won't continuously feed enough pressue to the system.
When you prime it the engine will draw enough to run for a bit then quit. They usually dry out if not kept full and sunfire fuel pumps are noted for this type of failure.
Try a used one for about 75 bucks. My kids Sunfire did exactly the same thing.

Testimonial: "thanks. I think Im going to try that and then also replace the coil."

2001 pontiac sunfire 2.2 runs smooth until warm then run rough engine missing and no power??? new wires new plugs new coils

your fuel pump could be getting hot and loosing pressure the way to find out if this is wrong is take it to a garage and have them to take a pressure test of the fuel pump, this might be your problem, you could have also got some bad gas, take and run you a bottle of stp gas treatment to see if it helps one of these most definitely your problem.hope this helps

Yesterday my 1998 pontiac sunfire ran out of gas, am i going to need to do anything besides add more gas to get it running again?

shouldn't have to....just put gas in it...and please don't run no additives in your engine/tank...your engine is not designed to burn the additives that are available on the after market...

5 speed manual transmission wont shif gears while running

You probably have air in the system. You need to bleed the air out of the system so that it will disengage your clutch. The air in the system is compressing and, therefore, the slave cylinder can't reach the full extension.

check if this car has load proportioning valves fitted for the rear brakes and working correctly if it is a rear brake slide.if not check A B S sensors and the A B S control unit.if the A B S light comes on when moving it is a sensor problem.if its on with engine on with car stationeryits almost likely to be A B S unit

96 pontiac sunfire bogs down and dies when I apply the gas.

as far as the bogging and dieing,it sounds like the tps.a simple trottle body service would fix that.for your new problem you need to some test before pointing to a salution.start the car and cover your tail pipe.as pressure builds it push you hand off.a clogged cat will put to much back pressure on the engine.i would un plug the mass air flow sensor and try running the car.this will turn on the check engine light.check your air filtter and plugs.also check your wires.a nother test is a coil strees test.(you have to go to a shop for this)if the car runs ok with no load but spitts and sputters in drive you may have a openning coil.checking with a meter only works if it does not run.last but not least while you at the shop, have them check your timing.a faulty cam sencer will bog the car down with bad timing advancement but not throw a code.
hope this helps, remember to keep it simple, expensive elec. parts are not always the problem
