The dash board has many light bulbs and the gear shift and the window switch all work on this circuirt. The radio if its stock turns up and down on this circuit too. The running lights are relaed to this circuit too as the runnings lights go out the dash does too. ( It's a DOT thang ) Lets you know that your running without tailights! But the dash can go out by it's self and aftermarket radios and their installers are the culprit. The dash light wire is in the stock radio harness and their used as ground wires and left to touch ground and blow the fuse. The fuse is called gaugesand it's a 5 amp or 7.5 amp. It's in the dash board fuse box behind the change holder that your left knee might hit if it were to hit the dash. If all the lights in the heater control and the gauges and the gearshift and the power window switch are all not working look for a blown fuse and it's cause. ( radio wireing ) or the running lights are out too and a bad marker light frunt or rear running lights. the park fuse may be blown and cause this and the dash lights won't work either. The dash dimmer switch can and does fail. It pops out by prying it out the frount theres 3 wires on it one is ground. one comes on with the lights and the other is the one going to all those light bulbs I just talked about. With the lights on one wire will be hot ( use a test light to check) A cheap one at the parts store or wally world only costs a few dollars at the most. If two wires are hot its on and it's godd one of these two will brighten and dim as you turn the switch. if only one wire is hot and the others stay cold the one that is hot jumpered to the one thats not black (ground) will make the lights work. Your right you could have bad bulbs but theres at least 15 of them and whats the liklyhood of blowing all of them at once ( doesn't happen unless theres a real bad problem involving crashes and jump starting. The cluster comes out by removeing the covers and then the speedometer cluster itself. If any of the lights work that the dimmer controls work and the gauges are't lit then this is the direction your going.

Try changing out the ignition switch if the dimmer switch doesnt fix it.

Entire dashboard lights won't work

buy it used like this or just failed now 30 years later? called out of the blue failed?
name all lamps in the dash that fail there are many
we can not guess them all.
the dash has piles of cluster lamps. (errors) and has background lamps that are DIMMER controlled.
dashboards have many lamps even the shift lever does.

  1. car starts and riuns good
  2. HL work key on and off, headlamps
  3. park ing lamps work
  4. dome lamp work (door opens domes glow)
  5. cluster error lamps work or not.
  6. cluster back ground dimmers work or not.
  7. AC panel dead. lamps yes.
  8. the car has 2 or more fuse boxs, you do know that riight
  9. all facts matter above to fast accurate diagnosis. (I give up)
  10. this car had option AUTO lamps , got that?
F13 ,IP box is fuse that can blow. is park feed (HL) to dash
and via the DIMMER. and also glows Illumination on AC panel
THE AC active lamp is a whole other matter.
if the DIMMER works on high but not below that is a BAD dimmer control, for sure)

IP fuse F6 is for AutO Lamps OPTED CARS.

THIS MAKES NO SENSE
I the dimmer switch turn the interior light on still so I'm assuming it's still good
IF DIMMER FAILS FAILS ALL MODES THE FUSE IS BLOWN
IF DIMMER FAILS ONLY OFF HIGH THE DIMMER ITSELF IS BAD.
IT HAS ONLY 2 PINS ON IT.
HOT WITH PARK OR HL ON.
THIS PATH IS DASH AND CLUSTER ILLUMINATION FEED
OR BACKGROUND LAMPS, ONLY, FOR NIGHT DRIVING.

Need replacement for dashboard light dimmer. Dealer wants $115. What is the typical resistance so I can use a fixed resistor for full illumination?

well if you have the skills you can do it.
measure the two extreme ends of the resistor only with the help of ohm meter if you do not find the value written which is usually mentioned like 10k ohms or 500 ohms like(ohms indicates like a horse shoe sign)
you take out the variable resistor from the dimmer circuit and can get from electronic spares supplier. if not the you find the middle pin that rotates on the carbon take a small piece of wire soldier to this middle pin and connect to check on either ends with the resistor out. at one end it should be glowing full while at the other end will not glow.
the resistor value should also be printed in the board if you need the value.
hope this solves your problem.

1995 subaru legacy l the dashboard lights are not working

  • Check fuse #9 at in car fuse panel
  • Check Illumination CTRL Module for melt-down
  • Check that Tail and Illumination relay is fully seated, top center of in-car fuse panel.
The relay is most likely the cause.

Dashboard lights do not illuminate Toyota Lucida

Check the dimmer wheel or knob. I do not have the specifics for this model just a general idea. Check fuses first with a test light. Let me know if I can help more. Thanks.

No instrument panel lights on 1995 Nissan King Cab

Ye, the dimmer switch still works.

I know this because, when I turn on the left direction flasher, the panel lights pulse dimly on and off with the direction light flasher.

Do I have a defective direction light flasher? if so where is it located?

Dashboard lights

Check the dimmer switch, they are known to fail. Play around with the knob by turning is and you should get your lights back, if not remove the steering column covers and spray electrical cleaner in the dimmer switch and just work it in. Last resort replace the dimmer switch.
