96 s-10 no power

USE LOAD CELL TO TEST BATTERY.
CONSIDER CLEANING BATTERY CONNECTIONS. COULD BE STARTER. TRY JUMPER/ BOOSTER STARTING TO SEE IF HIGHER VOLTAGE
MIGHT WORK. CONNECTION AT THE STARTER FROM BATTERY COULD BE LOOSE.

I'm thinking a problem with the battery and/or connections . Have the battery load tested for a dead cell . If the battery or terminals are bad there will be no power to let you get the key out and there will be no cranking noise either . A faulty CPS will allow the engine to crank but not fire

checking for loose connections.. bad solenoid..fuses links..is battery up..

Aside from building a garage or installing an engine block heater I have used this trick in the past on my 98 RR HSE. It may work for you if the starting issue is simply temperature related. Placing a shop-light or shielded work light underneath your block at night will produce just enough heat in many cases to overcome the slow starting problem.
Other possibilities may be under powered/weak battery. The rovers are known for high cranking amp demand and a weak or mismatched battery could certainly cause this problem. On the outside chance that it may be fuel delivery related you might try priming your fuel injection prior to cranking. Do this by turning key to position 2 (or last position before crank) wait til all the bells and whistles stop usually about 3-5 seconds, and repeat a couple times. If this is helpful, the bad news is it may be indicative of mechanical issues on the horizon.
****SAFETY NOTE***** PAY ATTENTION TO LIGHT PLACEMENT MAKING SURE NOT TO PUT IT IN PATH OF OIL LEAKS.

No, it isn't an ignition issue.

Check power to the starter motor solenoid.
If this is getting power when cranking, then the issue is with the starter motor solenoid or starter motor. Replace.

the previous owner had the same problem with my alero, he had to go get a new security button put in or something like that

Your alternator might be bad. Check if your alternator is functioning well.

Check the neutral safety switch - try cranking while in neutral also.

Should be very close to the harmonic balancer that's on the front end of the crank shaft. You will likely have to remove a component and the belt to gain access to it. Good luck.

You may have burnt starter solenoid contacts, do you hear a click when you try to start engine? If so the problem is the starter.
