It has a filter built into the fuel pump module that is located INSIDE THE TANK. If you had a 2001 Montero Sport Limited, that has a fuel filter at the drivers side ...
Go to www.hmaservice.com and register your vehicle by VIN #.. you'll then have access to wiring diagrams, shop manuals, service bulletins, campaigns, illustrations and procedures, etc.
Go to Fuel Pump (FP) under Shop Manual. Illustration shows access place under rear seat bottom. Removed Rear Seat Bottom... you'll see floor access plate ... remove plate to access fuel pump.
You should be able to access the ful pump thru the back flor of the montero. Start by removing the trim piece at the back of the Montero, this is the piece that holds the carpet down atthe back of the truck. Fold the back seat forward, now carefully pull up on the carpet starting from the back. Just before the rear axel you will see an access plate with, I believe, six bolts holding it down, remove and "bingo", you will see the access for the fuel pump and sending unit.
If you have lights flashing that usually means there is a problem with the vehicle. The 4wd light, I would guess is transmission or transfer case problem. There should be a code in the computer to tell you what is going on, it's going to take a good scanner to get the transmission or transfer case codes though. Most cheap scanners will only pull out the engine codes. I don't know about the fuel pump but, I would be willing to bet it's in the tank.
I just changed mine yesterday. It was pretty easy to find the directions on the internet. The only problem i had was finding the fuel pump relay. It is located on the floor board area of the passenger side, behind a plastic cover, near where your right foot would be. It is a 4 wired plug next to another 4 wired plug. It is the one on the left. Atleast it was for me. The other one is for your diagnostic or something. if you turn your key after removing the plug and your check engine light doesnt come on, then you removed the wrong one. If you turn the car on and it dies shortly after, then you pulled the right one.
