Could be the shift solenoids in the transmission. Try pulling codes even if light is not on. Sometimes it will set a shift solenoid code if that is the problem. Very common in chevys. Good luck

Remove trans pan and inspect shift solenoids. These are prone to come apart and visual inspection often finds the problem. Replacement units include a bracket to keep this from happening again.
Unfortunately you need a new transmission. A bad speed sensor can cause the transmission to shift hard but if it is free wheeling in 3rd gear that has nothing to do with the speedo.
Sounds like the idle air control valve needs to taken off and cleaned using a non-chlorinated brake cleaner or you can replace it. Also check throttle position sensor remember whenever you replace a sensor you have to reset the computer by pulling ECM fuse out and then putting it back.
Very possible you have a internal fault in the drive gear only.I would suggest that you remove it and have it rebuilt.We have a local company that rebuilds them for around 300 dollars.
Your transmission is in a "limp in" mode. There are 2 sensors that need replaced. Total cost should be less than $100. I had it happen to me on my 99 300m. The sensors limit the speed to about 25 mph and the RPM rev's high. Just get the sensors replaced.
