the dodge tranny you are refuring to has a electric od switch in the tranny, this is bad but a good shop should bable to replace for around 350.00 or not much more

Shift letters for a 1992 chevy 2500. what does each mean?
The D inside of an O is for overdrive. It is an automatic overdrive transmission. There isn't an overdrive button on it. If you want to disable the overdrive you have to shift down a gear.

Wheres the overdrive unit and how do i test it?
I'm guessing automatic trans. look at the end of the shifter handle there should be a button on the end . if you press it a yellow light should come on saying OD OFF . and the engine rpm should increase when driving, meaning the trans came out of OD. press it again and trans will go back into OD and light goes out.
