Fluid capacity of a 4 speed auto in 1998 cavalier?
What is the fluid capacity of a 4 speed automatic transmission in a 1998 Chevy Cavalier? I'm replacing a damaged pan and filter, there is no dipstick to check levels and the manual gives conflicting data.

check your trans fluid (while the car is running and warm) if the fluid is at the full hot section your trans will probably have to be rebuilt or replaced
THERE IS A PLUG UNDER THE CAR BY THE RIGHT AXLE WERE IT GOES INTO THE TRANS YOU PULL THE PLUG AND START THE CAR IF FLUID RUN OUT THEN ITS FULL IF NOT YOU ADD FLUID UNTIL IT DOES THERE IS A RED CAP ON THE TOP OF THE TRANS WERE YOU ADD THE FLUID THE CAR HAS TO BE LEVEL WHEN YOU DO THIS
you are wrong darcblod,in a 98 model chev.cav.the 2.2 engine is an automatic that was not made with a dipstick.it has instead a "check valve" there is a plug on the side ..remove it and pour your tranny fluid into the "fill" hole until the fluid just barely runs out of the "plug hole" ,replace both the fill cap and check valve plug and you'll be fine...it is important that your car is level and at operating temp......fyi some of the newer fords are like that too.
There is no dipstick for the newer model Automatic transmission Cavaliers. There is only a red fill cap on the driver’s side on top of the transmission. The only way to check it is to jack up the car, making sure it level with a jackstand on each side of the car, and remove a small plug from the side of the transmission, underneath the car. It will be small and in an American size. It is either a 3/8" or a 7/16" size plug. Once it is removed, fluid will drain out if it is overfilled. Once there is no more fluid coming out, it is at it's proper level. If there is none coming out, then add more until it comes out and levels off. It has a capacity of about 11 quarts for the 4 speed models. The 3 speed models have about 7 quarts. The dipstick for the 5 speed manual transmission is located on the back side of the engine. It will have either a white or yellow handle. It holds about 2 quarts of syncro-mesh transmission fluid. It is important that this fluid is used for the manual or problems will occur.
You can use Dexron II or Dexron III, but you can also use the improved Dexron VI which replaces both the afore mentioned fluids. Use Dexron VI as it is an improvment. Caution: Do not overfill. Check fluid level according to the instructions in your owner's manual and make sure the car is parked on a level surface or you will get a false reading.
Approximatly 7quarts, but if you are having problems checking the fluid, you must run the vehicle in park and remove a small plug on the end of the transaxle just above the pan and fill until fluid starts to flow out of the plug
