What to do if wrong oil dipstick is being used & cannot read oil

What should you do if you are not sure if the right oil dipstick is being used? We are unable to get read on oil level & not sure if it is because the wrong stick is being used or if there is no oil. Oil change companies will not change oil because they are saying the wrong stick is being used which could distort oil level & possible over flow of oil could occur & create engine damage. Can we add oil to obtain a read & then proceed with oil change?

I would drain the oil completely out, and change the filter. Call your local parts store and find out how many quarts the engine calls for. Put your new filter on and fill with the amount of oil the book calls for. See what the reading is on the oil stick. If it's not reading full, then you have the wrong stick. Most of the time you will know when the oil is that low, you will start hearing valves ticking and even more engine damage can occur. So my guess is someone put the wrong stick in, but check it yourself with what the book calls for..

Find out how much oil the engine and filter change takes, Drain the oil, change the filter, add the specified amount of oil, warm up engine, let the Rodeo sit for 5 minuets put dip stick in, look at where oil is on dipstick.
Ask around for a small independent garage to help you if you can not do it your self.

Drain all of your oil and replace with approximately 4.3 litres of oil then check your dipstick then you will know. almost all vehicles hold that much at full.

1984 4X4 V8. It has a pre-80's dipstick tube on driver's side and in the eng block. I tried a 19 & 21 dipstick and neither one shows a reading. Is it dry?

The only way to know for sure is to remove the oil pan drain plug and drain the oil. Then refill the engine with the correct amount of oil. Then see what the dipstick reads. You might want to invest in the right dipstick tube and stick as one to short will cause you to overfill the engine and one to long will cause you to short the engine on oil and burn it up.

How much oil do I put in my 06 subaru tribeca when changing oil and filter?

I would always go with the manual over what anybody else is telling you. But if you want to be sure you're putting in the right amount I find it best to use just slightly less than the quantity given in the manual as your starting point. So since it says 5.8 quarts, I would normally put about 5.5 quarts in. Then start the engine so that the oil gets pumped through everything and you'll get a more accurate oil level reading. Then use the dipstick to measure the oil level and see where it's at. Add more little by little until you're roughly in the middle of the min and max lines on the dipstick.

How quarts of oil does a 1992 passat hold, no manual and has the wrong dipstick in it. The car was given to me. The oil light and alarm is driving me nuts. The dipstick that is in it is reading full but...

That car takes 4.2 US quarts or 4 liters when you change the oil and filter. It takes 3.7 US quarts or 3.5 liters without the filter change.
Change the oil and mark the dipstick with a file so you know where the full mark is. Also that engine has 2 oil pressure switchs on top of the oil filter housing. If they aren't connected or faulty the oil light will come on. Hope this helps.

Location of Mercedes 2003 C320 oil drain plug

This answer is completely wrong. The oil plug is under the car underneath the second plastic aero panel from the front of the car. Second, the 3.2 litre engine takes 8.5 quarts of oil and not 5 as this will be seriously under filled. Your compter display in your dash will tell you this when it beeps, turns red and reads, add more oil. It also alerts you when the oil has been overfilled because there is NO dipstick on this car. The only dipstick here is the one giving the wrong advise.

Wrong dipstick

A replacement dipstick can be purchased at your local dealer. I suggest you get the right one and not try to fabricate a make shift one for something as critical as you engine oil level.
