I had the same issue with my 2006. I thought the compressor clutch bearings were faulty. After further research, the rattling noise was actually coming from the serpentine belt tensioner. Easy repair!
Hope this helps.

Yes, but there usually isn't enough room to do it without removing the compressor from the vehicle and it could be the compressor bearing making the noise. So I think it's better to replace the compressor and clutch as one assembly.

Sorry but nope... The unit is a whole...If ac isnt that inportant to you, then you can try this. Find the belt for your model without ac, and change it missing the ac pulley. Disconnect the ac plug and you have a simple fix... NO ac mind you but no noise either... If ac is important, then get to a ac shop and have them remove the old r134 before changing the compressor. Then simply return to them to have it returned to your system...

Noise from ac compressor

That would depend on the problem and prices in your area.
You can call around and ask for the cost to replace the ac clutch and the compressor.
If the bearing in the clutch is the noise, the clutch can be replaced without replacing the entire compressor assembly.

Can the ac compressor clutch on a 2006 dodge stratus be replaced without replacing the entire ac compressor?

i dont know of any domestic cars that dont have rebuildable/replaceable clutches on the compressor. best way to find out is to call a parts store and see if you can get the part.

Whenever I turn on my air conditioner, my car makes a roaring or rubbing noise. What is it?

Sounds like the clutch in the compressor which would usually be in the front lower portion of the engine on a pulley on the front of engine (passenger side on front wheel drive cars - and tubes are connected to it.  When engine is off spray with some lube but not on belt - allow to drip of for couple minutes.
Try that couple times and start car in between times using the air conditioning.  Not sure if you can replace the clutch unit or have to replace the compressor as a unit which would lose the Freon or R2 or whatever the new stuff is called now...
Hope that helps.

1996 impala ss air conditioner compressor is very noisy

That clutch and coil are serviceable without replacing the compressor but I have had little success with this as usually the clutch gets in that shape subsequently from activity going on inside the compressor which means that clutch is failed generally for a reason.replace the compressor -orfice tube-reciever drier and happy motoring......

2003 Tahoe (5.3). AC belt/tensioner/compressor (Chatters)

The compressor is bad. I have the same problem. Apparently none of the tahoe's compressors are worth a ****! im having to replace mine too. You have to change the compressor, the accumulator/dryer, orifice tube and flush the lines. If you look on ebay you can buy a complete kit to change it all for about 300 bucks. The dealership tells me that you need to change the fan clutch as well. They told me that the reason for the noises is the fan clutch isnt working properly and it lets the compressor get too hot causeing higher pressures in the compressor due to the heat. They called it liquid slugging I believe. Mine doesnt break the belt but when you give it very much gas it makes a squeal and then a grinding noise like your trying to put a standard transmission in gear with it running without pushing in the clutch. I asked if you could just change the fan clutch and they told me no its too late, you have to change the compressor and dryer/orifice tube.

AC problem

Sounds like the bearing and clutch went out. Its best to replace the compressor, unless you got the tools and knowhow to chg. the clutch and bearing. If you just chg. out the compressor, the refregerent has to be drained out first, and then unbolt lines on back of compressor, and electrical wires, and belt, and bolts then remove. Put new compressor on in reverse order. But system should be vacumed be for its recharged with refregerent.
