The shifter pawl on the trans maybe stuck in between gears from a broken spring? On it but try to remove the neutral safety switch to see if that is frozen it could've become broken and jammed from force applied trying to get the shifter to work and the shift lever will not move also disconnect the linkage and try to shift it from the trans with the neutral safety switch out and try to move the shifter cable it could be frozen or if any work was done the cable could be crimped inside the sheath causing it to not travel freely if it's frozen use a torch on the metal wire part only and gradually heat it and try to move it you must understand that I'm not there so you have to investigate the possibility of all described here yourself to get to the problem I don't think it's internal failure from your description so external investigation will be a big help especially if you have driven in deep snow or a lot of slush good luck stephen

SOURCE: Toyota corolla 2006 has a grinding noise when

If this is a manual transmission it sounds as though you have bad synchronizers for the 2nd gear...what I have done in the past is simply do not use that gear whenever possible to avoid unneccesary wear. It is a very costly job to repair this. You are better of driving it carefully as long as you can, make sure anytime you shift the clutch is 100% depressed before you move the shifter as well as while you make the shift into any gear at all. Do not release it until you are 100% into the gear you want as well. Most synchronizers are damaged by not shifting as I have described and/or jamming the shifter into gears when shifting. It is also critical to immediately have your transmission drained and have new gear oil / or transmission fluid added so that you are not cycling around the broken pieces of metal through the transmission. I have driven some cars like this for years and years. If it still works, do not waste you money on a rebuild...simply do what I suggested and drive carefully, avoid second when possible, and change that tranny fluid more often then reccomended,...GOOD LUCK

SOURCE: 1994 toyota estima intermittant start problem. makes click

This could be a grounding problem. Check all battery connections. Also check motor to body ground strap for corrosion. Check battery to motor ground and battery to body ground. Even if the ground looks allright it can be corroder underneath, so you have to take the ground bolt off to clean it.

How to to install a manual trans in an automatic 92 corolla

Sometimes the pinion gear is a different size for the automatic and smaller for the manual, make sure you get this right or it will chatter your teeth out. You also need to find a car like yours with a manual trans so you can pull all these parts out, shifter, clutch pedal, a hydraulic master and slave, your speedo probably won't work, or fit, maybe. Your propeller shaft might not be the same length, but you can get that from the donor car. I would find another auto to put in there, it would be easier. Hope this helps.

2000 Chevy Prizm Lsi 4-speed auto trans. problems

That does sound like a linkage adjustment problem.

If that does not work, I'd try a fluid change and filter. But your diagnostics with pulling on the gear shifter is a pretty good indication of a linkage problem.

1996 Corolla Auto Transmission problem

Hi. 2005 Corolla CE. It's normal. They tend to do this when upshifting form 1st to 2nd gear. No timing chain readjustment needed.

96 Corolla. Overdrive not working properly, if not engaging after 45mph constantly. If driving on the city, is normal, but not after 45mph, when the car is trying to engage overdrive in order to save gas and preserve the trans gears. If not able to get help at the dealership, find another one and explain them the situation.
