I start my car and everything sounds like normal, like its going to start but it doesnt start. the gas light is still on but have put gas in it already about 5-8 gallons worth. when i drove it yesterday...

You may need a mechanic for this.
If the engine cranks the starter and battery are ok.
It if cranks but does not start, you would need to know if you have spark to the plugs, fuel to the injectors and normal compression.
To answer your other question, you would remove the spark plugs and use a gauge to check compression.

1998 Ford Explorer completely dead

If you don't have any electric functions working I would have to say that the battery is dead.  Where the lights left on last night or a door open?  You can take the battery out and take it to your local auto parts store and they can test it for you to make sure it's not dead and if it's not, then you can have them charge it for you.  Let me know if you need anything else.

Clicking starter=car not starting

Regardless of the battery age, sounds to me as if you have a drain on the electrical system First thing to do is completely recharge battery. An initial quick inspection might show a light staying on, whether it be a door , reading, glove box, or trunk lights, among many other things. If nothing is obvious an electical reading of the system while removing and reinstalling fuses will show the circuit causing the drain, Hope this helps
