When started the engine revs very high for a few seconds.
If I flick the starter several times without actually starting the engine when I do start it the problem is not there

Does your ignition key have a small 'chip" in it, sometimes call a smart key? If it does, that may be the source of the problem. The "chip" is actually a small resistor that has to be read by the sensor in the ignition switch. Try cleaning the key with alcohol and see if there is any difference. Sometimes they get dirty and the sensor has a hard time reading them.
Starter Have a friend turn the key to the start position while you tap the starter with a hammer. If the starter is going bad but has not completely failed most of the time it will start when you tap on it.
Ignition switch If the key turnes easily and lights, radio, etc. come on when it is in the on position I don't think it is the switch. Plus if the starter has never been replaced I'd say the chance that is the problem is very high.
try turning key swicth on and off several times if you replaced fuel filter it may have to reprime its self turn key on let pump run turn off turn on again do it 4 or 5 times might help
The RX8 has always been a bit problematic at starting, at least until Mazda started fitted uprated starters (~2006). The standard, weak starter motor spins the engine quite slowly, causing problems getting compression to start the engine.
There's various things to try...
DON'T pump the gas whilst starting - foot OFF the accelarator (might be beneficial to depress the clutch just to reduce the loading on the starter motor). Check all the RX8 owners' forums - standard advice.
DO use a confident turn of the key - keep cranking until it catches (but not for more than 10 seconds - in which case leave for 10 seconds before trying again) - don't just crank for a second or two, then retry. That's as per owner's manual.
DO ensure that you leave the engine to warm up ALWAYS before shutting off - to avoid fuel being left in the rotor - that affects compression badly if left any period of time, resulting in very poor starting (risk of flooding).
If non of the above helps, get a hot-engine compression check to ensure that the engine isn't shot. If the engine is okay, then consider getting an uprated starter motor, or 3rd-party replacement. Many 2004/2005s have had their starters replaced (I considered mine, although I've had no problem over winter :)
Apply some white grease to the starter gear and turn the engine over without starting it, remove starter and check the gear mesh pattern to make sure starter is aligned right. You might need to shim the starter. The starters bendix drive might be sticking. Is it a brand new starter or a used or rebuilt starter?
