Car won't shift out of park after started

If you are parking on a hill, or an incline make sure to use your parking brake. When you park put your foot on the regular brake first and then apply the parking brake then shift into park. This will keep the car in place and not put pressure on the transmission. When you are about to leave do the same. Apple the regular brake, then shift in drive or reverse, then release the parking brake.

Hi there,

Most modern automatic cars require the driver to depress the brake pedal first, to allow releasing the gear out of Park.

Some automatic transmissions also provide an 'overide' switch near the gear lever, to allow manual release of the gear lever.

If neither of the above resolve this, then you will need to check the operation of your brake switch, mounted on the brake pedal.

you would have to get your transmission link rod fixed

The
shifter needs to be inspected. Its quite possible that The
shifter assembly is got misaligned, it has to be open and realign.







There
are many other possibilities. But if it was working right up till now and
suddenly this shifting problem occurred then its shifter
assembly alignment issue.

The key not coming out is directly tied into the car not going into park far enough.You may have something stuck down inside your gear shift area keeping the handle from going all the way into park or something could have gotten in a wedged itself up near your shifter levers on top and the side of the transmission. I would pull off the shifter console first and make sure nothing is binding the shift levers before looking at the ignition switch area.Good luck.

Shift interlock solenoid is probably bad.. there is a spot in the console if you look that will allow you to depress a tab that will allow the shifter to move.

Could be possible bad motor mount. Does the engine look like it sits normally in the chassis? Watch the lower end of the transmission shift linkage while someone else shifts it. Look for places where it rubs against something else.

There is a switch between the brake and the transmission. I forget what its called but unless you have your brake pedal pressed your car will not shift out of park. If you do have your brake pedal pressed there may be something wrong with the sensor.
