My truck did this after I replaced the fuel pump. Turned out to Fuel Pressure Regulator. It would crank and crank but never start. It's located underneath the black plastic manifold on the side of the injectors.

What is the outside temperature there? I have had very hard time starting my 98 chevy when temps are in the single or negative digits, especially after sitting. The battery just does not have enough cranking amps at those temps. The truck sounds like it cranks fine but when you watch the volt gauge on the dash it dips close to the red area while cranking. I have replaced my battery and my truck starts fine now. i still think I need to replace my battery cables. I would suggest cleaning cables and boosting the battery while trying to start. I know this sounds too simple but it is easy to try. The computer will not function with low voltage.

Testimonial: "Thanks for input, temps have been in the 30s&40s at this time and the battery was replaced about 4 weeks ago and the cables are good to go"

Be sure to clean between the two postive cables at the post. I once replaced a starter only to find that the new one did not work. Then took the cables apart and found the culprit to be nasty white corrosion.

How did the truck start and run before it quit? Did the engine come with upgraded MFI injectors? You can tell by looking down the throttle body. If you see plain black hard plastic fuel lines inside the plastic plenum, then these are the old style SFI. This system placed the injectors centrally in the plenum and has poppet valves on the ends of the fuel hoses to spray fuel into each cylinder. These have a tendancy to leak or stick closed. This can either flood the cylinders or cut off fuel in the case of a stuck poppet.

The upgraded MFI system places the injectors at the cylinder port and does not have poppets. You can identify this by looking down the throttlebody and seeing fuel lines with a rubber covering to protect the wires that run down to the injectors. The fuel lines on mine are white in color with grey protective covering. I highly recommend the upgrade.

Before replacing, you should definately check for injector pulse from the computer. Also look at your spark plugs for evidence of flooding, which will look wet or shiney around the center electrode insulator. Also look to see if the intake looks wet inside indicating leaking SFI.

Try removing hose from throttle body and pour some fuel in engine if it fires up check for injector pulse. Parts store should have an injector tester. If you have spark fuel and air it should start.

What engine does your truck have ? does it have The Central Sequential Fuel Injection (Central SFI) (4.3L, 5.0L, 5.7L) ? Is your fuel pressure with in (60-66 psi). if not , will not start . I find this a lot also fuel pressure regulators leaking will cause a hard start . https://youtu.be/09_wQ9yQ85A

What would cause fuel pump in a 1998 Bonneville not to run when key is in on position?

The pump is only suppose to work for a few seconds with key on/engine off. This primes the fuel system. then it runs when cranking and as engine runs. With key on it should, however, build up pressure and then shut off. Only real way to tell what is going on is use of a test guage often available at parts store loan-a-tool items. Shop manual will tell you correct pressure at key on and when running. Wrong pressure (low) can be bad pump, filter, regulator, relay or leaky injectors and other leaks. Very common for pump in tank to fail and often it will draw excess curent first damaging the relay.

How to chck a fuel pump

check 12V at pump terminal when on/cranking

hear/feel pump operation (if external to tank)

if low pressure (carby) disconnect fuel line and observe flow. If high pressure (FI) connect fuel pressure guage and observe pressure. Check fuel filter while doing all this. Filters are the source of many problems that start people messing with fuel pumps.

I have a 1998 jeep wrangler sport and it is having starting problems. i usually have to crank, release, then crank again to get it to start. it always ends up starting, but it takes a few tries. it occurs...

You can mount a fuel pressure guage to the engine fuel rail at its bicycle valve bleeder, with tof see if it has pressure when you first turn on the key to start. You may be able to hear the fuel pump running by listening at the fuel tank fill cap that you would remove for that moment. By turning on ignition to start, not run, you are energizing the fuel pump to bring up pressure that should happen in several seconds. So, check if it gets to normal fuel starting pressure, maybe 45 to 60 psi. Then turn key all the way to run, to get car engine running and watch the fuel pressure to see if it stays pretty constant at that 45 to 60 psi. Turn engine off, and watch how long it takes for fuel pressure to drop, and it should not happen fast but instead over 15 minutes or more. That might indicate your fuel regulator valve isn;t working right.
Is it possible your starting system is the culprit, say some battery cable loose that may make starting hard or eventually quit until you tighten these cable ends at battery and starter.

1988 C2500 engine stalled, cranks doesn't start.put starting fluid will start, checked power to fuel pump no power checked fuse to fuel pump it's good .could be ECM.

Remember that the relay only will send power to the fuel pump for only 3-5 seconds after the key is turned on. You will need someone in the cab cranking the engine over while you test the circuit to the pump. Make sure you are testing the correct wire. If the engine will start with starting fluid, then there is a fuel delivery problem. Connect a fuel pressure guage to the fuel rail. If you have the required pressure, then you may have a computer that is not grounding the injectors. If you have no fuel pressure, you may have a inoperative fuel pump or a clogged fuel filter.
